Anyone know much about wireless networks?

Yes
My flat mate is having trouble connecting to our Sagem wireless network. 4 of us connect no trouble but when he enters the password it just times out.

We have WPA (TKIP) encryption running with SSID showing. If we disable the protection he can connect to the open network no problem. All drivers are up to date.

He's running vista and the wireless card he has is an Atheros ar5007eg.

Anyone any suggestions?

From what I've read trying switching to WEP instead of WPA may be worthwhile but I haven't done this yet because I don't want to cause unnecessary disruption to the other people I live with.

I've asked a mod to move this to the computing section. You'll get a better response there.

It may just be his computer can't cope with WPA, so WEP is the next step.

Before we got our internet installed we borrowed a neighbours (with their permission of course ) and they had WPA which he had no trouble with.

when you say it times out do you mean you get the spinning donut over the wireless icon, then it stops, then it spins, then it stops etc?

things to try:

* update his network card drivers if you havent already.
* in network and internet -> manage wireless networks, delete the network if it exists there and retry.

It gives a message along the lines of "your attempt to connect to the network has timed out".

I'll try deleting the network if it already exists.

sounds like for some reason there is a communication issue with WPA on.. but only for that router..

do you know anyone with a USB wireless stick you can try to rule out an internal wireless device issue?

Problem solved. The drivers weren't updating correctly through the windows network devices menu so we downloaded manually from the net and installed them and all is working.

Thanks for the suggestions
