Anyone know of any technical articles on the Canon 24-70mm?

I'm fascinated by the reverse zoom design of the 24-70 as it just makes so much sense and wonder why this lens seems to be unique (to my knowledge) in this.

Does anyone know of any technical articles which explain the design and maybe why other extending zooms are designed the same way? I'd be fascinated to find out.
 
I like the way the hood is fixed in position so that as you zoom wider the element moves outwards avoiding vignetting. Very clever design IMHO.
 
It is an awesome design - also means the hood protects the extending barrel from knocks/weather even more.
 
You may have seen this but it's a good illustration of how the lens groups move during the change of focal length.

Lots of movement of groups in all manner of directions - perhaps this is why complicated/expensive and not usually done?
 
Nikon 24-70 2.8 is similar. Any others?

Just an optical quirk I guess.
 
Interesting that Nikon went the same route - wonder what's so special about this type of lens that made them both do this?

I've got an old sigma 28-70 f/2.8 designed for EOS film that has the same extension design.

Something to do with the physical dimensions of the focal length/aperture, cost will be a factor, and maybe it's incompatible with IS and therefore inappropriate for other designs?

It can't be anything more than a happy coincidence which suits that particular spec.
