I dont think my canon 1dmkIV+ Canon 400 f2.8L can be beaten.. Its a loverly combo.. However my 1dmkIII + 135mm f2 is good daytime but against the mkIV leaves a lot to be desired at night.. good but not as good as mkIV+135mm...

I would only get 1k for the mkIII

How about selling the mkIII and the 135 for 2k total.. and get myself a used Nikon d3s+70-200 .. how much cash would I need.

Why not have the best of both worlds? Anyone else mix'n'match ?

I used to shoot both for a little while but then slowly sold all of my Canon gear.

Having used both a D3s and a D3, the 's' is indeed an upgrade, I'm not sure if the extra cash can 1000% be justified though, the ISO is cleaner but marginally so, the video and memory expansion on the buffer are the more notable changes.
That'd be one thing to consider if buying a D3 second hand. Being as your a sports shooter 16 raw files expanded to 36 could be invaluable.
A buffer upgrade costs around £300 knicker.

There was a good thread that explored the benefits here:

Second hand prices for a D3 usually are around the £1800 to £1900 regions, and D3s's aren't too frequent on the second hand market yet.

70-200 mkI's can be found sub 1K.

If you get around 2K for your mkIII and 135, it's possible to get at least a D3 and a 70-200 for an extra K.

Just food for thought though, prices of new gear can be very close to mint condition second hand examples, (Beware of grey imports):

Best prices on a 70-200 mkII:

Another option, and one that other sports photogs have taken advantage of, is to contact Nikon UK and discuss a swap out of the gear that your looking to sell (mkIII & 135).
You never know, they may make an offer that suits you nicely.

I have changed form Canon to Nikon. I have hung onto a Canon 1d mk1 simply because its just so darn good at low iso and its not worth a lot.

However its never getting used and operating it is so alien now. I work by instinct and wrk very fast and normally in manual exposure and focus , there is no time to have to "think" about where the controls are

I have a friend who has a (very) large pile of kit for both Canon and Nikon. I personally don't understand why when he could dump either and complete his lineup for one or the other.

He does take both sets of gear out with him...

Personally, I wouldn't - not being able to swap stuff around and the "tissue memory" issue with having two completely different bodies would negate the value of having a second body in my book.

Do I sense a little Nikon envy creeping in here.... ;-)

nope no nikon envy.. as you will see I am of the opinion my mkIV and 400mm cant be beaten IMHO and i dont think i would want to get rid..

i ahve had a canon 70-200 and wasnt impressed with it at night under floodlights so i wondered if for same price as a mkIV I couldnt try nikon 70-200

thanks for all the info in your reply.. :) I will go have a look at.. this might all come to nothing... it was a thought and once i get a thought it tends to stick

nope no nikon envy..

For what its worth, my friend is of the opinion that both the MkIV and the D3S have different strengths in different areas.

He, like many I know (and probably I'd agree too), would dearly like to see the D3S's advantages rolled into a Canon APS-H body but I can't help but think that the perceived advantages are mearly a reflection on the technical differences between the two that are inherent in their overall design goals.

Ney bother :D Sometimes I wish I had kept my 1DmkI, I loved that camera, it was just on it's way out :(

Using a D3(s) for really tough circs is not a bad idea at all. All the best

decided canon AND nikon not the best idea and have shelved it..
