Just want to see who, if anyone, owns the new Nikon 28mm F1.8G. I've seen a few reviews on it, all which vary on how good the lens actually is. I want a wide prime for occasional use and was planning to buy the sigma 35 F1.4, but its like trying to buy rocking horse faeces for the nikon mount and the price is rising due to demand...

I looked at the 28 a few times, decided against as I don't like the look of it.It looks like a cheap lump of a lens, and as you say, reviews are very mixed.

I'm going to buy the Sigma 35 1.4 ... it's getting such great reviews not to! It's dear, but cheaper than the Nikon equiv, which it is apparently better than in many ways!

Do you need the extra 7mm? at the expense of possibly less sharp images?

Either would work fine as its not something thats gonna live on my camera anyway as my 105 macro has that job 90% of the time. The rising price of the sigma 35 is so damn annoying though and the stock for the nikon mount seems exceptionally limited compared to the canon one -.-

I'm the opposite lately - I too have the 105, and it's been neglected lately. Keep meaning to give it a good work out, dust it off and get it on the go again. Thing is, most of my casual shooting [when not trying to be artsy or photography orientated] is done with wider lenses, my 24-70 2.8 for instance - chasing the kids about the house, fun shooting, out and about, in a bar, when I just want to go for a walk and take pics for me :)

I have just checked the local stores here vs amazon for the sigma 35, and I have to say, I'm shocked to find it's cheaper to buy here Vs amazon! that's a first. I guess I'll have to order while it's hot! :)

Theres some serious price gouging happening on the sigma 35 F1.4 tbh. I might actually save more and pick up a second hand 24-70 F2.8 instead to fit my "wider" needs as currently my widest lens is 70mm! I always tend to shoot telephoto and never used my 50mm F1.8G when I owned it so sold it. I used my 28-70 F2.8 for about 5% of my shots, yet I needed to raise cash for my now fiance's engagement ring so it had to go :O

I've been having a look at tokina also for their wide zooms as some of them get some great reviews for FX so I'll have to read more I guess, although I think they may be too wide for me.

I just made a complete botch-job of my order .... only went and ordered the Canon version of the sigma, only realised when it was too late, when the order went through and went to process ... d'oh!! Better ring them in the morn to cancel :/ They don't actually have the Nikon version in stock

I had the 28mm 1.8g until recently. As Cagey says, the biggest drawback is that it feels very cheap for something that isn't. It's quite light which doesn't help in the feeling high quality stakes and the plastics are more in line with kit lenses than pro lenses.

On the (big) plus side, I thought that optically it was supreb. I too had a 28-70 2.8 but I never owned that and the 28mm at the same time so can't really compare the two but I will say that the 28mm never once disappointed. Mainly used mine for landscapes and the off indoor portrait or group shot.

Graham, thats what I'd be using mine for. How come you got rid of it mate?

Lol cagey, I've nearly made the same mistake a few days ago as I saw it being sold for about £500 but then realised it was also the canon mount -.-

I managed to have the order cancelled, they say they wont have the Nikon version for another 6 weeks! :/ maybe it's just not available anywhere yet? Amazon are out of stock even.

Sold nearly all my gear recently. Have a house to buy so back to basics for a little while.

Ahhh fair enough. Got any example shots taken with it mate?

Yeah cagey thats what I've seen as a minimum order time, yet its not guaranteed either. Digital rev says 3 months!
