Anyone recognise this?

This came attached to a Nikon 50mm lens I've just purchased.

I've no idea what it is.

My best guess is some sort of adaptor fitting for a video camera. The thread diameter is about 58mm.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Ref my earlier edit. I'm right in thinking it can't be for a projector or an enlarger right ?

It's an XX to XX converter for your camera. That would be my first guess.. other possibilities are a lens extension for macro tubes. This would be the piece that your lens goes on.
