Anyone thinking of getting a Tablet

and like me cannot make up their minds yet!!
The ones on my shortlist:
Samsung Galaxy 10.1 32GB - not being stocked due to Apple Court case.
Sony S Tablet - still not out has good connectivity
Toshiba AT200 (AKA Thrive) - still not out has good connectivity
Asus EEE Tablet - good reports but tablet feels heavy in the hand.
Archos G9 101 - still not out.
iPad 2 Tablet - but then its Apple!!! and iPad 3 expected 2012.
Acer Tablet - not good reviews.

See my dilemma.....the ones I want to compare are still not on the market but have received good reviews and are excellent contenders to the iPad.
Anyone else have a shortlist

Hi Neil - main use would be to show my photographs to friends/family etc and connect to Internet as and when from a wifi spot rather than 3G

Pretty much any will do that to be honest. But things that impress me with the iPad - the screen, battery life, video playback, amount of useful and just plain cool apps (Inc games, let's face it you'll stick a load of games on it :D). My 32gb wifi has replaced my laptop, for anything needing a pc environment I just turn on the desktop.
 
I know...I am seriously tempted by the iPad 2 but looking for that little bit extra ie: better screen resolution; USB and SDHC connections + HDMI.
As an aside I see Seagate have just come out with a Goflex Wireless Satellite 500Gb Hard Drive which would be ideal for a Tablet

What are they like to type on? I'm not sure what use I would have for one other than it being portable.
 
The iPad does have USB & SDHC connectivity, it just depends on what you want them for; it's called the camera connection kit.

One of the few things that you can't do is save back to the card from the tablet.

My overiding reasons for getting the iPad (and I really really wanted the Samsung) were:

Shuttersnitch
Filterstorm

Until Android can match the capabilities of those two, it's a right off as far as my use is concerned.
 
i'm considering an iPad 2, but cannot justify it at the moment
 
If i were you I would go for the Samsung or IPad2 they both have excellent screens. Personally I would go for an Android device over Apple though for the extra functionality.

It is surprisingly intuitive considering there aren't buttons to press. The on screen keyboard in landscape is 99% if not 100% size and as I can touch-type I rattle through the text as I would on a normal keyboard.
 
Mark - the camera connection kit does not interest me as I have never liked connecting my camera to a pc or similar.....even to transfer images much prefer a card reader.
What I want to do is post process my images on my desktop pc PS5 and then transfer them as 'the finished product' to the tablet.

You don't need a USB port to achieve that, there are numerous Apps available- Portfolio being one of the better ones. Transfer is either via the iTunes Apps interface or via Wifi.

In the T&C for Dropbox isn't there something that they can use your images.....i seem to have read something on TP

I've not looked at them in any depth, will check and get back to you, as that could affect your decision.
 
I think I`m begiing to sound like a Vodafone junkie but if you are with them and due an upgrade, keep your old phone and get an ipad2 for free...I did last week and I think its the absolute mutts, just ordered a usb cable of ebay so I can connect my camera directly to the ipad, theres stacks of connection options.
 
There are too many posts about when the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 are coming out and most are just regurgitated. I look at it like this iPad 2 for no £££s or iPad 3 for lots of £££s......
Depends what you want it to do, not everyone is going to be the same.
 
although I am currently selling my 32gb iPad 2 to fund an Asus TF the iPad 2 is still by far the best IMO, but I dont need the awesome battery life or Apple specifics and I have an Android phone so it feels right to switch..

I tested 5 tabs before choosing the iPad2, touchscreen just felt superior and more responsive.
 
Let us know what you think about it Steevee, as its on my shortlist and would welcome a hands on review

Doubt it. Announcements haven't even been made yet. IPhone 5 in October maybe, but I can't see them releasing the new phone and iPad at the same time. It makes no business sense. People will generally have cash for one or the other whereas a 5-6 month gap between allows people to purchase both on release, plus it would mean no more major events until late 2012.
 
I think mid 2012 too, but I would have thought run up to Christmas would have been a bonanza time

but then when has the time of year mattered too much with apple products, people WANT WANT WANT so go and buy regardless :)

like i said earlier last i heard/read they were waiting on the new powervr chip which isnt due this year.
 
i like it, good size, quality screen, well built, all my desire hd apps work great, only thing is the keyboard when not using the dock, remidied by installing thumb keyboard .

I love it how my iPad reads and displays the Nikon Nef files perfectly, just pop the SD card in the camera connection kit and job is a good one. Would be even better if there was an Aperture app for it to enter the meta data ready etc. But viewing the images without having to resort to raw+jpg is brilliant. And so is battery life.

PS. In twelve months time there will be an iPad 4 ;)
 
There is, it's called Filterstorm. Shuttersnitch and Photoforge will edit IPTC as well.
 
Of a NEF file? But surely can't access the photos that get transferred by the camera connection kit, as those photos show up as DCIM for import later into Aperture directly. I thought the storage is sandboxed and cant be shared by the applications?

Will check those apps out though, thanks!
 
It should work fine. The camera connection bungs them in the camera roll like jpegs.

Ah but I wouldn't want my raw files to be converted just to add some meta data. Others might be happy with that bit I wouldn't.
 
Ah got you, you want to pre record the captioning and keywords prior to conversion later.

Notepad followed by Cut & Paste at home would probably be the best option then! :)
 
ASUS TF101 is great. Heavy? I don't think so.
Screen? Excellent, bright (you can set to auto adjust depending on ambient light)
Touch response? Fast.
Apps? Millions - too many, but fun trying them out :)
Connectivity? WiFI only. But dead easy to setup.
Has MicroSD slot. But the USB Power cable connects to pc which W7 recognises instantly without any drivers, transfer of files is drag'n'drop.
Typing? Like any other touchscreen.
I don't have the keyboard dock which gives you another 9 hour battery, but as I leave it USB tethered to the PC when not in portable use, the battery life is superb.
Does play 1080p movies so long as the codec and bitrate is right.
720p look just as good on the 10" screen, so no point in 1080p in reality.
Front facing camera: Web cam quality
Rear facing: Better, but not a serious contender for my K-7 or S95 :D
Doesn't support Skype video because Skype don't support the Tegra processor.

Photos from the K-7 and S95 look amazing on this screen!
