Anyone use a 5D MKII for motorsport, lowfly ?

Hi

I'm going through that "should I upgrade, no I'm fine, but it would be nice" phase :lol: and I was wondering if anyone uses a 5D MKII for motorsport, lowfly aircraft.

I was wondering if anyone found the fps a restriction, I know the 7D is twice as fast, but there is something pulling me to full frame.

If anyone has any experience of this, I'd be grateful for your input - might help make my mind up :thumbs:

Andy - I upgraded to a 5Dmk2 last year from a 50D and had the same concerns. I took the plunge and have never looked back. I have done quite a bit of low level aircraft stuff (www.garethwhiston.com) and although the fps is pretty slow, it's not caused me any problems at all. Ok so I may only be able to take 5 shots instead of 10 for each aircraft but I don't throw many shots away when I get them back on the computer.
If you can afford it, the 5D is a superb camera, so much so that my 50D is now up for sale as it never comes out of the bag anymore.

I've shot lots of aviation(inc lowfly),motorsport etc with the 5DMK2 and never had any problems with the camera.The biggest factor(for aviation esp) is the loss of the 1.6x factor of the smaller sensor.So figure in that you might have to buy a newer lens or at a push use a tcon on what you already have.

Def does Gareth, I don't go firing off 10-20 shots with my 40D now, but having the option to fire a quick 6.5 if needed is great. Quick question, why don't you throw as many away - is that because you've not taken as many :lol: or is it just picking the aircraft up quicker / better ??

As with Gareth, just what I wanted to hear (although the bank balance (and wife) might not agree).

I was aware of the loss of crop factor and this is still a consideration, but I beleive that if I cropped the 5D photo to the factor of 1.6 (my 40D) there would be very little difference in picture quality and very similar in size.

I've shot lowfly with it and like he says the crop is the only issue, I have a 70-200 only which does feel a bit short at the loop :p
 
The crop factor definitely plays it's part, but I have found the picture quality (and higher ISO capability) much better on the 5D and usually crop in PP with normally no loss in IQ.
A 200mm on FF in th Loop would be a struggle though.

I've a 300mm lens so should be generally okay, but I am looking to get, over the next 12 months an 1.4 extender, so I'm virtually back to the crop factor if reach does become an issue.

Just wish Jacobs had their offer on now for the 5D + 24-105 lens kit
 
Just went to a rally day with my 5DII, and had a blast. Don't listen to the naysayers who will tell you that the 5DII can't focus on anything that moves (in fact it can keep up with an exige in low-ish light, and I was definitely the weak link in the equation :D ). I'm sure a 1D or a 7D in the right hands will get more keepers, but I'd think unless you're really very good, the difference will be minimal!

Not sure about that, a jolly nice chap is selling a 1D mkII in the classifieds section as we speak, for much less than a 5D ;) :D
