Anyone use this combo? 5D2 + 17-40m F4L + 70-200mm F4L

I've been hanging on for the D700 upgrade but I'm not keen so I'm going back to a 5D2. The above looks like a useful combo which covers all the important bits with good quality lenses for sensible money. Anybody tried it? What do you think? As always your opinions are much appreciated.

(If I ever won the pools I'd fill the gap in the middle with a 50mm f1.2 :D)
 
I'm using that combo except on the new Mark III, not the Mark II. What exactly are you wanting to know? Are you concerned that the focal ranges might not cover a broad enough spectrum of shooting situations?
 
Good question. I'm not worried about the focal range - I'm sure it will cover everything I need. It's more the lens quality, max aperture and whether I'd regret not going with just, for example, the 24-70 f2.8. Also, some combos just work well and others don't. Does it work for you?

How are you liking the 5D3? Great shots in your sig galleries btw.
 
Works finew for me (although I tend to use the 24-105 the most as it has the best of both). I don't miss f2.8...

Well, there's no denying the 24-70 f/2.8 is a great lens but it's a somewhat different beast. I guess it comes down to what you're shooting - personally, I'd say the 17-40 f/4 is more useful for landscapes and architectural shooting since it provides a very wide angle, but then 24-70mm is okay for landscapes too (although in the case of landscapes, the f2.8 obviously isn't going to be much help). I guess if you're wanting to do a lot of portraits then the 24-70mm might be a better option.

So far, the combo is working great for me although funnily enough, I'll probably be adding the 24-70 f/2.8 into my arsenal one of these days, as it fills the gap between the 17-40mm and 70-200mm pretty much perfectly. So far, my impression of the 5Dmk3 is great although I'll only have a proper opinion after the weekend, as I have some activities planned to really put it through its paces. But my initial impressions are that it's absolutely fantastic - mind you, my previous main camera was my 7D, so it's quite a big jump up for me.
 
The 24-70 f2.8 is a bit of a beast, expensive and too short for the way I like to shoot portraits. Another combo I've been thinking about is the 35mm f1.4 L + 135mm f2L but it's going to be less flexible and cost more than I fancy paying.
 
I recently used that combo with a 5Dmk1 and 50mm for a few weeks in Costa Rica and it works well. I rarely go wider than 20mm on the 17-40 as I find it too wide for my liking and there is a bit of distortion. I'm used to the f2.8 70-200, but as long as the light is good the f4 version can hold its own, as well as being usefully lighter!
 
Thank you Lewis. Very helpful. 17mm will be too wide for me but I fancy the idea of going wider than I'm used to, distortion and all.

I'd like to add the 50mm f1.2 when my ship comes - would round things off nicely.
