Anyone used a Macro 48 LED light

No but I'm interested too.

There seem to be some other interesting products too. I like the portable battery pack for lights.
 
I bought the ring light off amazon ages ago, it works well, but if using for macro and you get too close the light level falls off, but saying that I was still getting enough light when the the subject was 2 cm from the lens.

If you are shooting people it is a bit to bright for your subject to look directly at the camera - I spotted a LED system on the interwebs (but lost the link of course:( ) that works like a flash ring triggered off the hotshoe, looks good, then there are huge contraptions that attach to the lens that direct the on-camera flash into a ring light.

Anyone seen LED macro twinlights? Not sure if a ringlight is for me, I want asymmetric intensity to create more contrast and shadows..
 
I have a Meike ring light with 48 Leds. It's a great bit of kit for fillin flash, great for macro down to about 2". It has a left half, right half switch to allow you to soften just one side of a face etc. Also adjustable in output and whether you want continuous light or flash.

I cant post any pictures as yet as I've just been playing, but at £24 of the bay of evils it's worth it just for fun.
 
Chris, that looks interesting.. can you adjust the 2 sides output power independently? Or just one output level and on/off for the sides?

Also can you rotate the ring when it's on your lens (if you want top/bottom split for example?)

Rigged up a prototype tonight using a step ring (77mm OD), a 90mm angel eye (24 LEDs) and a 110mm angel eye (36 LEDs) - all held in place with hot glue... was trying it at first with a 9v supply and it was ok, bright enough to handhold at least on 1600ISO.

Put on the 12v supply and I can still see the 60 spots in front of my eyes :D I'll experiment more - but for £6 total it's doing a sterling job...
 
For the led rings - eBay - I guess you can get them elsewhere - it's what all the boy-racers are modding their cars with now apparently. "Angel eyes"

For the stepping ring - it's one I had in my bag anyway.

Here's a detail from a Clydesdale £20 note - http://i.imgur.com/BHbqW.jpg - the oddness on the left (as you look at it) eye is a crease in the note. No extra lighting, no post processing, just a straight resize from the multimegapixel original. First shot with it (handheld, 9v supply, 1600ASA, 1/100s, f/2.0, 50mm f/1.8 Mk I + 65mm of extension tubes).

Upping supply to the rated 12v, can safely drop to 400ASA, f/8, 1/100s)
