I am seriously considering changing from 70-200 f2.8 to a 135 f2L and wondering if anyone had used one especialy for sports and really especialy as a close lens at footy rugby etc

i have one and used it at recent Ireland athletics championships.I think you commented on it...
here

It's a great fast, sharp lens, but you may miss the flexibility of the zoom for sport?

funny i've been pondering ditching a 70-200 for this. Although then I'd have only 85 and 135mm lenses....

at the mom I have only 50 and 135...although since buying 135 I stopped using 50 :D

I thought you'd pulled the trigger on a 135L last week?

for one stop less, no IS and no zoom its not worth it. I had both and would have got rid of the 135 if I had to have given up one.

zoom isnt an issue for me... but one stop less? your kidding.. like winning the pools at some places i go to... that extra bit of light will be a godsend and well worth the money...

I only use a 24-70L and a 135L. Works for me.

Just see how little real difference there is between 135 and 200mm. Try it on your zoom. If it's a little smaller on the sensor, there are enough pixels to crop in a touch. Or you can always get yourself a 1.4x and still have a 189mm.

Weights less and is a whole lot more discrete.

Go for it!

My question is why do you wish to change?
You will not have as much control for sport as you do with a zoom

i put my 70-200 onto 135 for a bit and it seemd just the job.. its mostly for behind goal lines as the 300 will do most of the work..

also with that extra stop will give it a try at ice hockey.. currently use the 300 for that from the seats ..

do the odd play on dress rehersal night which means theatre emty and I can zoom wiht my feet :)

i wont miss the 70-200 as it didnt hack it in low light at 2.8 for me..

i kept my sigma 120-300 for a long time for the versatility... when i finaly went to 300 prime i gave myself a good kicking for not doing it sooner... i envisage this to be a simmilar scenario :)

It was none IS and went for 650 within about an hr of posting on here.. sorry :)

Well the 135mm arrived at 7.30am and thats put me in the bad books for this morning wiht the misus who got up to open the door.. I was naked and half asleep ..I didnt realise the time and nudged her... take me too long to get dressed.. nip down luv ... oh dear 7.30am aaargh I am in for it :(

It seemed heavier out the box than in ... nice to see a lens inpristine condition.. mine could do wiht a good clean :)

had a try and am very impressed so far.. cant 100% be sure but I dont think it needs calibrating.. certainly not for short around the house stuff... took some long distance stuff and they look good as well but again hard to tell on inanimate objects for me.... gonna wait until my 2 teenage sons appear from there pits and get them to go play footy and try it then.. best way to test for me... on subject i do most.. football.. real people :)

But seems great so far.. good as expected:)

i did need to calibrate as the pics at the first night game where deffo off slightly.. I think "-5" will make a difference :)

this is straight out of the cam.. 100% crop and absoloutly no pp. just as it is 100%. aimed at her left eye.. thats to your right

hand held jpg, f2, shutter 200 and iso a whopping 6400
