Anyone Using Canon 28mm f1.8 USM?

Looking for a wide fast prime to use with Canon 6D and the Canon 28mm f1.8 USM looks to be the best bet, without spending really serious money. I've heard it can be a bit soft at the edges wide open however anyone got any first hand experience?
 
I use a 28mm f1.8 on a 7d which gives it a normal field of view in 35mm terms.
I can't fault the image quality and it focuses well on my camera. On a 6d I would imagine it to be very good but it isn't cheap.
Have you looked at 35mm f2? Supposed to be a good alternative.
 
I have one and use it on a 5Dii, great sharp light lens, never had an issue with softness wide open either. Its pretty wide on the 5 being FF, which is why I got it

The 35mm f2 seems to be the only reasonably priced alternative to the 28mm f1.8 but it's a tad longer than I want and doesn't have USM.

35mm f2, £210
28mm f1.8 USM, £370

It seems to be an area of lenses that Canon lacks choice in, as all their new 24, 28 and 35mm lenses, which have IS, are all f2.8 which isn't particularly fast, and are all rather expensive (£560 - £700).
 
Hi Neil,

I have one that I use on my 5D. Great lens, sharp at f1.8, tack sharp from f2. Love it!

I had one 35mm f2 once and it was one of the sharpest lens I ever had. But the 28mm f1.8 is a much better lens overall. ;)

It's a fair bit wider than 28mm but the 40mm STM is much better than it's price would have you expect.
 
I had the 28mm f1.8 on my 5D2 as a wide angle prime lens for landscape work.
Stopped down to f8-11 it was sharp but from f1.8 to f2.8 it was soft in the corners.
I also found it to be not wide enough for my landscape work so in the end I sold it and got a Canon 17-40.
 
Thanks Stupar. I'm not looking to use it for landscape (I have EF-S 10-22), I'm looking for its low light abilities and for its compact size so that it is more dicrete than a larger zoom.

Yes, it can be soft in the corners at larger apertures, but probably the corners are at a very different distance than the center, and with bigger apertures it may not have enough DoF for them to be in focus anyway...

And we may not forget it's not a 24L nor a 35L. ;)
