...was there an instruction manual for the lens in the box? I do not seem to have an instruction manual for the lens (I do have one for the camera).

Many posters on here have said look at the lens book about certain things with regards to the lens but I do not have one???
 
I don't recall seeing a lens instruction manual with mine.

Is there anything specific you need to know?

Look in the user manual for the camera, all info should be in the front of the book somewhere.
 
Page 21 of the 500D manual tells you what all the bits are.
Pages 33 to 35 is pretty much the rest of it.

There isnt that much to know really. Even the 70-200 f/2.8 IS only has 15 pages in the manual and that goes in to all sorts of stuff.
 
Just opened a brand new 500d today and there was no manual included.

There are two buttons at the side, AF/MF and IS on/off.

Switch the one at the top to MF to allow you to focus manually, you can not focus manually whilst the lens is set to AF. Turn the end of the lens left/right to focus.

IS, leave it on for pretty much everything. Turn it off when you are using a high (1/500+) shutter speed to avoid lag or have the camera on a solid platform (i.e. tripod).
