Anyone with a Canon fit Sigma 150-500 in London/Berks

I have been considering this. Lens for a while and at the moment Jacobs are selling it for £766.00. However, after using the Canon 100-400, I'd like the opportunity to actually give one a try first. So if there's anybody not too far from Uxbridge that has one I'd appreciate the chance to meet up and have a quick play.

I might be a little far but I live near Wimbledon and have the 150-500 (as well as a 7d!). You are more than welcome to try it. Are you coming on the wildlife park meet on Sunday?
 
Do you actually own the 100-400? If yes then I would stay with that one.

If not then the 150-500 is a good lens to start with and can be found used for between £500 and £550.

No, I own neither at the moment, but have access to a 100-400 and have used it on a number of occasions. However, that extra 100mm is really handy for shooting birds. But I need to satisfy myself that the IQ is up to the mark.

Maybe try the 100-400L plus the 1.4x converter ............ works well for me

Some people have no problems with the sigma iq here and from what I understand the stabilisation is better on the sigma. I haven't used the canon but I have had very sharp shots at 500mm down below 1/200s! I also understand that the canon is not good at anything over 400mm. ;)

Hi Jim,

First thing, I HAVE used both lenses, so my views are based on fact not hearsay. And I'm guessing you haven't actually read my blog - that's OK, I'm not offended, much :'(

I don't disagree with your comments. I have some cracking shots with the Sigma, some of the sharpest I've got. I'm sorry to see it go (in fact I still have it! Currently under offer from someone I know. Might be offering it here if it doesn't go). So IQ is up there for sure, but not quite as good as the Canon L Series based on my assessment, which was the question asked by the OP (but it's pretty damn close).

I haven't tested the IS back-to-back but can believe what you say is correct. The Canon's design is quite old so the IS is worth only one stop I've read - it's not a big issue for me, shooting things that move fast I need good shutter speed, so the extra stop of the Canon helps in this regard. [I'll qualify this since writing the blog - with the 7D I'm now starting to shoot some video and having good IS definitely helps when hand holding. Now, are you going to get good hand held shots with any zoom in the 400-500mm range with any amount of IS - don't know, but this may be a factor going forward - another excuse to upgrade ... :shake: <-- The Wife!]

You're also absolutely spot on about the Canon lens not being any good over 400mm - but then as a 100-400mm zoom, getting that extra out of it is quite hard ;) Again, if you'd read the blog you would have seen I compared IQ at Sigma 500mm and Canon 400mm cropped to the same size (so greater crop on the Canon) - Canon IQ is definitely better - I was going through exactly the same dilemma as the OP (but rather than rely on opinion I splashed out the cash to get to the facts).

Bottom line - Both are cracking lenses and neither would be a bad choice. I would (and do) highly recommend the Sigma, but my back-to-back assessment is the Canon has marginally superior IQ, even accounting for the loss of focal length, and overall for what I use it for the Canon performs that little bit better (focus, speed etc.). If it wasn't the Canon would have been up for sale and gone by now!

@Andy Just for your ref I get a warning from Blogger when I visit your blog (it's in German for me as I'm in Germany) but probably saying something about Adult content, maybe because of some pictures, one of the reason I would recommend moving your blog to self hosted as it's quite off putting especially for visitors from the general public who just see a big warning sign.

Roger - thanks for this. I have set it up to warn about adult content as I do post my art nude work on there (along with the other non-adult stuff). It's in the configuration so I could disable it but I'd rather put off anyone who might be offended, even if this means they miss out on my words of wisdom!

At the end of the day my blog is a bit of fun and a learning experience for me rather than a serious effort to engage or generate sales leads etc. I'm amazed it gets read at all.

Thanks for taking the time to mention this - appreciated :thumbs:

No problem with your opinion at all. We all have our own uses and preferences. I actually think this is one of those decisions where you have to make it by using the lenses. I didn't have the money for the canon, so went with the siggy! Damn fine camera the 7d, definately a good choice! ;)
