Anyone with decent home insurance that covers their gear?

No
Yes I know, another insurance thread. Sorry but search seems to throw up a load of threads with not much information on home insurance.

I've got about £3k worth of gear which I want insured for all risks when away from the house. This will, on occasion, include leaving it unattended in the car overnight.

My home insurance is up for renewal and I'm desperately trying to find someone who will cover me for the above but they all seem to have some restriction or other, either not covering the unattended vehicle eventuality or limiting their payout to a grand or two.

So does anyone have home insurance with the above cover and didn't pay an utter fortune for it (i.e. not Hiscox or the like)?

We had home insurance that covered gear in the home and we then paid extra for about 4k of cover when out and about, it wouldn't cover theft from a car though. I've upgraded mine now and use aaduki as the value of my gear has gone up considerably lately (oddly since joining this forum!)

I'd seriously look at getting specialist photoghraphic insurance as it will cover you for a lot more that the household policies

My home insurance with Lloyds has some cover, but I paid extra to cover my gear upto £5000 away from the home. Means I can't take all my stuff as it is worth more than that, but if I wanted to take it all I couldn't carry it far enough anyway!

It appears even some of the specialist insurers have daft clauses on vehicle cover.

E&L won't cover me because the boot is accessible from the driver's area.

Glover & Howe (who seem to get good mentions on here) won't cover unattended vehicles between 9pm and 6am!

What's annoying is that the only thing home insurance won't cover is unattended vehicles, yet I only need to leave my kit in the car a few times a year and then only for a night or two. To insure against these rare occurrences, I appear to have to fork out for a policy with the likes of photoguard :(

But does it cover unattended vehicles left overnight? I'm finding most home policies will offer a few thousand pounds worth of cover for possessions outside the home for a small additional premium, but won't cover unattended vehicles or, if they do, only with severe restrictions.

My home insurance with eSure covers it in and outside of the home for pretty much everything including accidental damage and theft from a motor vehicle subject to it not being covered under my car insurance, as my car insurance is with the same company I'd just let them fight it out between departments ;)

No, but I don't leave my kit in an unattended vehicle. :cuckoo: That would be like me leaving my grandchildren in the car.

My kit is covered on my flat, through Aviva, it's covered for about £4000, for damage, loss, theft, anywhere in the world, not sure about the cover on a unattended car though (perhaps i should check) i think if the vehicle is locked it should be ok, but again i couldn't swear to that.

Mine is ok, individual items covered up to £2000 and valuables up to a total limit of £10000
You have to notify them of any single item over two grand and then arrange cover for it at extra cost

All the above is in and out of the home with accidental damage and new for old replacement

I use Saga and droped carm coming off the train from London in Harrogate and they just replaced it with a new 1.The cam i droped was the canon EOS350D and they replaced it with the canon EOS400D I had no probles at all with Saga. It covers all my equipment when I am away from home even if it is all left in the caravan or car.

Doubt many will cover unattended cover overnight. Mine does ( I'm with Imaging Insurance ) if I'm on assignment but otherwise no cover 7pm-6am.

my home insurance (Privilege) covers upto 5K in the car as long as it's concealed e.g. in the boot & the car is locked.
It also has a single item limit of iirc £1500 but I did go through this thoroughly with them that with an SLR 2 single items (body, lens) could be attached together & be worth more than that albeit seperately they aren't & they said that would be covered.

Just looked at Privilege and they're quoting me nearly £400 for less cover than I can get elsewhere for £220. I'd be better off just getting a photoguard policy :)

I am just about to go with axa but waiting for their small print to come through. From discussions they will insure items up to £12000 singularly, also abroad and equipment in a locked car out of sight.

Be interested to hear what their small print says, although they're quoting me around £100 more than Churchill atm.

Why would you want to risk leaving your kit in a car? Mine is covered in a car (I'm with Lloyd's of London, not to be confused with Lloyds TSB), but I still always remove my gear from my car as I don't want to be seen as being a bad risk by my insurers should I suffer a loss of valuable equipment with a resultant increase in premium.

Unattended vehicles have been mentioned in this thread as that is obviously what people are worried about. Why are they worried about it? Because it is a big risk and likely to cost them a lot of money as theft from vehicles can be quite common. Therefore, why should insurers not have the same concerns?

Can I ask why it's not possible to take your gear with you the few times in they year you see the need to leave it all in the car overnight?

(Hope it's not a personal question :D)

Quite. I was away at the weekend with baggage in my car, but every time I left the car, I took my camera bag with me, and I only had about £900 worth of kit with me.
