hello,

Looking at purchasing a new lens, but wondered if there is anyway to test the lens first, i normally buy from warehouseexpress so this makes it difficult, any ideas?
 
If you want to test to see if it the right focal length etc, you could hire it.

If you are worried about quality issues, you can return the lens within 7 days under the Distance Selling Regulations.
 
Have you not got a camera shop near you? Jessops do have a limited selection but a dedicated shop would help you out I'm sure. Park Cameras are about 40mins from me so worth the trip if i need anything.

to test do i need to take my camera body?
 
A thumbs up for lensforhire from me decent prices and you get to play to your hearts content while you have it. I'd much rather play with a lens for a week in real conditions than take a couple of test shots inside a store.
 
You could always wait until early march and have a play at Focus. All of the major manufacturers have a stand full of lenses for you to play with.

I would suggest it could matter greatly if you are not purchasing the actual lens you are testing.

Some manufacturer's quality control can leave a little to be desired with wide variations between individual lenses. Sigma's 50mm f1.4 and 12-24mm EX DG spring immediately to mind.
