Aperture Backup? How to automate?

Are you using Time Machine? That will be backing it up. Failing that I've not found anything free like synctoy for Mac. I was doing some backups using Automator, but now I've got some LaCie drives I'm using the copy of Intego backup assistant that came with them, that seems pretty good.

Have you read Cowasaki's post on backing up Aperture? I'm sure he put one in the Mac tips thread.
 
Aperture provides "Vaults" to allow you to quickly and easily back up your library. It's not automatic, but if you leave the drive your vault is stored on plugged in, all you have to do is hit update as you finish for the evening.
Does TimeMachine play nicely with Aperture libraries these days?
If you used referenced master files, rather than having Aperture manage them, as long as the masters are on a disk that is being backed up by TM, they will be fine. The metadata for any versions or edits you create will still be stored in the Aperture library, and should be backed up using a vault, as above.
 
I backup the library using vault, and the referenced images with iBackup to an external drive.
 
Cheers for that. will look into doing vaults then each time I have finished using. Srry for the silly question as still at work, but are these pretty simple to do? I don't use time machine just yet, as need new external really to start doing this, but will vault them for time being, is it still advisable to vault them as well as use time machine?
 
I would, I don't use Aperture, but I keep a separate copy of my processed DNGs in the cloud, it would take longer to restore from them than it would from Time Machine, but if my flat burnt down/my back up drives got nicked.

My advice is to always have at least 2 back ups.
 
Ideally, you'll want to have your vault on a seperate hard drive from your Aperture library. If your Macs HDD dies you'll lose both, so there's not a lot of point in the Vault.
I have my main vault on the same drive I use for TM, and that drive is cloned onto another drive periodically, which is stored in my desk drawer at work (just in case my house burnt down, as above).

Vaults are a doddle to set up, just click "Add Vault", choose a location and you're all done. You can keep updating the same one, and it will tell you when it's out of sync or if you have projects and files which haven't been added to a vault.
