Ive had a minolta 50mm f1.7 AF delivered this morning, which I think has an issue. When the lens is off camera and I move the little prong on the rear of the lens (to open up the blades)....once released isnt it supposed to spring fully closed again?? If opened part way, it springs back but if fully opened...it stays fully opened.
 
The likely issue is grease on the aperture blades as I asked for a repair quote on another Minolta lens (35 - 70mm f4) with the exact same issue and according to the servicing person who I asked, thats quite a common fault with older Minolta lenses (I sent the lens back to where I brought it from as it was not as described).
He quoted me £30 plus P&P for a repair assuming no additional parts were needed and as its a prime and therefore less complex to dismantle etc I imagine it might be a bit cheaper. If you want contact him for a quote for getting it repaired then you can find him here:

Miles is a top guy who does an excellent job for much less than a lot of other repair services and most of the members in the Film and Conventional section have used him for servicing and repairing equipment/lenses; he did an excellent job servicing my 1973 Pentax Spotmatic F and for about £30 less than I was quoted by several other places.
 
Ive had a better look tonight and there IS oil on the blades, so im guessing thats the main issue. Every shot weather its at f1.7 or f22, look the same.
 
Does anything happen when you select a small aperture in the camera and press the DoF preview button (if you have one)?
 
Ive just tried it. DOF preview does nothing. The lens seems to be stuck wide open.....Looks like I'll be returning.

The exact same problem that the lens I got had, good thing I noticed it didn't stop down as I was using it on a film camera! Still at least I was shooting B&W so it could take the 2.5 stops of overexposure on the few frames I did shoot (good thing I didn't load that slide film I had in the freezer!)
