Apple MacOS 10.7 (Lion?), iLife 11, iWorks 11 and smaller Macbook Air

They're gonna run out of moggies to name it after eventually...

The reality is that this might be one of the last MacOS X versions !!

There is a distinct possibility that Apple will MERGE MacOS and IOS to create

MacOS 11

.... and who knows what group of creatures they will name them after?

Thing is the the iLife and iWorks suites just did what they were meant to so not a lot to mess with. Snow Leopard was called Snow Leopard after Leopard because it was never meant to be a major upgrade and was priced as such. This is likely to be a big one with a complete interface change predicted!

Not sure about the merger of IOS and MacOS which is being predicted but that would meant iPads of the future having the same functionality as a laptop !

It is likely to be next year before we see MacOS Lion though!

On Macrumors they are speculating that there will be new notebooks - as the desktops have been updated recently. Hope so cos I just got an iMac :)

You can't go off past experience with this one as they have previously managed it that quickly but there is nothing to say that they will this time. There is lots of "MACOS10.7" traffic being detected originating from the area of Apple's HQ so they are certainly using it internally but how far along it is is another matter. The thing with Apple is that they don't have the same driver issues as Windows so the testing is not as time consuming in that area. I am likely to upgrade my 17" MBP in April and stick W7 on this one so it will certainly be here by then although I will no doubt have it on the first day anyway.

There IS a likelyhood of a new Macbook Air with an 11" screen. The 13" macbook air was pointless to most people as the macbook pro had shrunk to such an extent that few people wanted the air considering the extra cost for a lower spec.

11" MBA, turn that into a tablet and we have a sure winner :thumbs:

Thank God I didn't get my daughter an iPad; may just push mine on to her and get this new MBA :)

So in other words, it's taken Apple this long (about 3 years) to realise that the netbook market IS viable... now we just have to wait for them to bring out an 11 inch computer and sell it as cutting edge technology :p

If the price was right though it may well be something I'd pay for. Running OS X on a 7 inch Asus EEE is all well and good but it's not very powerful.

I had a 12" iBook so Apple clearly have nothing against smaller machines. They build what they think will sell. I've also used the 7" Asus with MacOS and to be honest would get another for the same purpose.

As soon as the 13" MBP came out and I was able to compare the two next to each other I knew it was curtains for the current air. The MBP 13" is not much thicker than the Air yet gives the user an optical drive, more memory which is expandable and better HD options so its a no brainer when the Air actually costs more.

Apple knew the netbook market was/is viable they are the seriously not stupid BUT they are not going to release something just to fight against others, they pick their fights and usually win (often by have nobody to fight!)

you are right.. I even owned a 12 inch iBook (although it was the clamshell, still quite big and bulky).
 
Just out of interest, what sort of price do they charge for a new OS, I know Snow Leopard was a dirt cheap upgrade (£25 if I remember right)


A quick search and there are plenty of cats left, just a small sample of ones they could still pick

I am careful where I listen to "information" about new Apple stuff. I think that the new Air is very likely because of the pics and withe the German pics of iLife11 that is likely too. We'll find out soon enough.

It will probably come in at the same price as the outgoing one!
 
Any idea how to find out if your machine is capable of running 64bit code? I have a fairly elderly Core 2 Duo 3.06Ghz CP iMac. Will that cut it?

Thanks, I thought that it was, wanted to check. iMacs are more expensive that PCs, but cost of ownership seems far less. Apart from memory, I have no hardware issues in three years but seemed always to be upgrading something on PC.
 
If you check my top tips there is a 64/32bit tip that points to an application that shows you whether your processor and EFI are 64 or 32 bit.
 
i want to buy a new mac mini in the next few weeks .. is it worth me waiting for the new OS 10.7 or will this just be more expensive?

It's difficult to say ! Leopard was £79 and Snow Leopard was £29 I think. I would guess that Lion? will be back to £79 for a single computer and £129 for a family pack. There is also the possibility of a combined pack price inc iLife and iWorks. To be honest I only actually used iWorks in order to write tips and didn't use iLife more than a few times so neither are much of a loss to me. Snow Leopard does everything well but I am hoping for some new stuff in Lion like USB3 support. I think that Blu-ray support has gone now. If that was ever happening then it would have by now (its actually of little real use though).
 
would be nice for blue ray support just as an extra plus point .. i need a new blu ray player so buying my mini would be sorted!

im just thinking if i hold off buying a mini.

when the new OS is released wont it come pre installed with it?

This will be the announcement not the actual release of it
