I have an old Powerbook G4 running Panther, with a 20gb drive. I need to upgrade the drive to a bigger faster one.
Ideally, I would like to transfer everything onto the new drive before I fit it as I have lost my Panther install discs ( I had them 8 years ago, cant understand where they could be!)
I looked at Superduper and Carbon Copy Cloner but they dont seem to run on my lowly Panther.
Any ideas to facilitate a smooth upgrade?

Changing the internal HDD is pretty tough. I was thinking about it too but quickly realised it would be better to get an external usb drive instead. Cheaper and gives you loads more space.

I found an earlier version of Superduper that will work with Panther. It's about half way through copying the drive now.
I don't think changing the hard drive should be too bad, I had the base off today and it looks like you just unplug the lead and prise the drive out.
New drive comes tomorrow, I'll see how I get on.

Which exact model of powerbook is it? There are some problems on some models which have a possibility to trip you up.

You can copy the drive to another drive using Super Duper which will give you the replacement and then it is "just" a matter of fitting it. On one of my websites I give general advice about taking laptops apart and it is worth looking at it.

This is a link to the instructions for the iBook upgrade BUT they will work well with the Powerbook <LINK>

Its a Powerbook G4 800mhz , I think its the Titanium 15" DVI version. I have the hard drive changing instructions from Apple. The base comes off with about 8 torx screws ( I did this today to glue the plastic surround back onto the steel base) and the hard drive is easily accessible and seems to come out easily. I am sure that it wont be that easy, but I am not averse to stripping computers and rebuilding them. Some even work again afterwards!
