Applying GGS protector to D90

I've successfully applied a GGS protector to my D40 2 years ago and it's been great.

Now doing the same to my D90 but hitting a problem. The middle of the protector and middle of the rear screen are touching causing an obvious smear. I am fairly certain there's meant to be a tiny air gap as they don't touch each other (other than the 4 sticky edges of course). Am I correct?

I am assuming the screen and/or protector aren't perfectly flat (convex/concave) and either is still not 100% clean. Ordered an new protector as well, as the first shattered when I removed it (predictably as I got careless).

Anyone had this problem and if so, how they overcame it?
 
i must admit didnt have a problem with both of my canon bodies applying the ggs screen. Not with bubbles or uneven surfaces any way!

When i misaligned the first tinme i tried it cracked when trying to remove it. - i bought another and was just more careful the next time.
 
I tried the ggs when I had the d90 but like yourself had an alignment problem kept getting air bubbles and eventually ended up snapping the protector. not had a protector since then
 
No air gap on mine, but that was on a older camera.
I came to realization that a glass screen protector might scratch the screen if its shattered, so I bought Brando film protectors instead for my new camera.
 
Applied my GCS protector, on my D90, a few months ago. Found it very easy (unlike the ipad protector!) and certainly didn't have the issue you describe.

If it's the protector that is concave or convex then ask for a replacement, but if it's the lcd screen, you'll have to look at other protection methods.
 
The best way to get a GGS off a camera is to warm it up with a hairdryer, then lift one corner very gently with a fingernail. Keep warming the perimeter of the GGS as you lift - an assistant helps.

NB. Don't use the hairdryer on 'high' heat setting!
 
I received the 2nd protector set today so will give it another try tonight with good results. Just to say, the smaller protector for the top screen went on fine.

On a side note, I bought the 1st protector from an Ebay store and when I broke it, I was rather annoyed at myself but also the store as they had repackaged it to be in a smaller box (they added more bubblewrap though). I did fire them an email asking why they did this as I thought maybe it affected the protector. In the meantime, I ordered and paid for a 2nd from the same place (giving them benefit of the doubt and cheapest). Pleasantly enough, the store told me I could have the 2nd one for free, even though I didn't ask for a refund. So that was good news.
 
All sorted. The 2nd one applied to near perfection. I can only imagine some sort of dodgy maufacturing tolerance in the first. This second one has a dodgy silver line visible from where the silver glue part overhangs the glass but I can live with that.
 
Glad to hear you got it sorted Sameer. It's pretty unusual for GGS stuff to be out of tolerance, they're normally perfect.

PS. Use the hairdryer trick if you ever need to change it again.
 
Reading this thread has worried me a bit. I received a GGS screen today and it isn't in a box at all, just a flimsy plastic tray and polybag. No instructions. Are there fakes around?

I was initially wondering about this but a quick google suggested no reports of fake ones.

The ones I received were also in just the tray, wrapped in 2 layers of bubble wrap, but then in a small cardboard box. No blister pack it usually comes in, however, the instructions were folder and included in the box, but they are in chinese (?) anyway, so useless.

I also compared the protector and instruction to the one for my D40 (Amazon bought I think) and they were identical.

So I don't think you should worry. Just be really careful installing it.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if these things are sold in 'bulk' packaging, at a slightly lower cost to the retailer/supplier. You know, like 20 in a box, or something :shrug:!? That might account for the packaging on yours.

Just an idea :|.

That's how mine came.

I read one seller suggesting that you should keep the backing paper so that if you want to remove the screen you slip the backing paper between camera and screen to break the adhesive bond. Perhaps that's from the official instructions. I don't know as I didn't get any with mine!

I tried that and it doesn't work. Heating up the adhesive does.
