This is a real sad story which we are all observing very closely and all hoping for a happy outcome but......

Where is it going too lead, are the Police right in releasing the name and photo of the suspect without any other facts coming out ???
 
Well I hope they have the right person cos his life is finished now and probably his family will be shunned by lot of folk. I can also see the police point of using him to hopefully jog peoples memories.
 
I just hope she is found safe soon.
 
Been a few days, I am not wishing anything bad for her but its not looking good.
 
I hope for nothing but a positive outcome on this, but I do have that awful feeling that this will end with the same terrible news that we are used to hearing in these situations.
 
The mothers plea on tv today looked a little false to me, no tears, just some sobbing and abreak down at the end, the person with her showed no emotions whatsoever.
 
A very sad state of affairs. I have a grandson who is the same age and there is no way he would survive on his own in that area for 3 days. Unless she is locked away somewhere with food and water, then the outcome looks very ominous. Lets hope she is found safe and well.

also it has to be asked what the hell a five year old was doing playing out with no parental supervision - I mean older kids fair enough, but 5 ????

ever cried for 48hrs constantly? ever had a child go missing, even for a few minutes, and had that absolute deep, gut wrenching feeling.... wonder how you would be reacting after 48hrs of that same feeling, then have a load of cameras pointed at you.... unfair to judge until the 'end result' is in.


Like everyone else, I hope for the best, but can't help but fear the worst. :shake:

Was the very first thing I said. Not only out playing, but nowhere near her own house either, if newspaper reports are correct.

I feel for the parents, but I'm afraid they need to take some responsibility for the situation.
 
Very sad affair, hoping she is found safe and well.
A few thing that don't see to add up eg. Why do they say the police have detained the man on suspicion of abduction then next you see the family appealing for someone out there to let her go...is there another person involved?
They seem to make out the man held was recogonised by the other children but they also said she got into a grey van but now it seems to be a blue Land Rover, maybe it's because of being left hand drive.....hope they get some answers and she's back home safe
 
witness statements are notoriously unreliable - people get car colour and model wrong all the time - and thats adults, so kids are going to be even worse.

It's a horrible situation. If she is found safe and well then the police will have done everything perfectly, if she isn't then they will get the blame...

It's unusual to identify a suspect in this way, but my (uninformed) guess is that this gentleman is well known locally and the police hope that by naming him the public may be able to help them to put together a detailed picture of his movements, which may be vitally important, and which may give the best possible chance of finding her quickly, if indeed he is involved.

Its unusual...what about that case when the student went missing, cant remember the name now but they practicly named and shamed the landlord and it turned out to be wrong, hope this is not going to be the case :|
 
I'm probably going to upset some people here but it has to be said.

what was a 5 year old child doing on her own unsupervised at 7.30pm at night when it was completely dark by that time? People keep saying that it will never happen to them and things like this always happen to other people, but hasn't anyone learn't from the Maddie McCann incident? Or countless other incidents where parents just push them outside on their own, and in the dark? Seriously what where the parents thinking? There would be no thieves in the world if people locked their things away properly and there would be less child molesters/kidnappers about if parents didn't let them out at night unsupervised. It always takes something like this after the horse has bolted before people take notice and even then others are still ignorant to the fact it could happen to them and still let their kids out, but 5 years old, are you kidding me? My son is 6 and he's in bed at half 7

I just hope she turns up alive and well. I also think its wrong for the newspapers to jump the gun and show the picture of the guy the police arrested. Unless he is charged and on his way to court, he is still only under suspicion and if he is released without charge, people are still going to remember his face. Remember that landlord who was arrested over that girl who was murdered a couple of years ago? and it turned out to be the next door neighbor who fleed the country. The landlord ended up ruined and had to change his name and identity because everyone jumped the gun and still gave him abuse and hassle afterwards even though he was publicly aquitted

He was unofficially named by locals, the police didnt release his name until this morning (he was arrested at 3.30 yesterday). They wouldnt have released his name etc if something hadnt come out in the interviews with him over the hours they have held him for.
As for the contradiction with the car/van, a white van was found by a bridge over the river, was cordoned off etc before they had arrested the guy. No more info about that van has come out, perhaps he owns a small van and the landy?

Watched that 999 what's your emergency program the other week it was a family special or something along those lines. The police were saying how many kids, as young as 3, are just out and about on the streets with parents that have no idea where they are. At one point they had a toddler that was found roaming the streets in their van trying to get the kid to direct them back to where he lived, which obviously didn't work. IIRC it was a good few hours before the parents got in touch with them to report the kid missing.

The mind boggles. I don't know the particulars of the April case so exclude that from the following statement but it's such a shame when innocent kids are dragged up by parents that just can't be bothered to take care of them properly.

I saw that programme and I was absolutly disgusted with some of the people on that. I hate wife beaters even husband beaters too (come on it works both ways) and how some of the kids as young as 5 know the 999 number and have to watch their parents getting beaten in front of them made my blood boil. I actually had to go outside and have a cigarette at one point just to cool down. But yeah that toddler, what the hell was going on there? At the end of the show they said something about social services are now investigating that family over other unrelated things
 
when i first saw the reports and photos of that beautiful little girl my heart sunk. i cannot imagine what the parents are going through.

but what on earth goes through the mind of anyone who could even think of harming a little child, innocent and trusting. the whole thing makes me feel very sad. a truly horrible situation and i hope that she's found alive.

Some of the calls they played where horrific, don't know how the operators do that job, credit too them for being able to deal with stuff like that on a daily basis, not to mention the services that go out to deal with it.
 
I think the most angry I've ever been in my life, was early one Sunday morning this June. It was around 6:00 am, and my girlfriend and I were taking our dogs for a walk.

As we walked over a small common, we came across two very young children walking along in their pyjamas. I took hold if both dogs whilst my GF went over to speak to them (I'm a 6ft skinhead and didn't want them to get scared). The girl was 4 years old, and her brother, 3 years old. We asked where their mum an dad were, and they said that they were still in bed and that they had opened the front door to go for a walk.

We got them to show us where they lived, and it was a good 20 minutes away. When we got there, sure enough the front door was wide open, but no other signs of life, so I banged on the door and waited for a response. It must have taken a good 5 minutes of knocking and shouting up the stairs before we were greeted by the sight of a middle aged man in his dressing gown asking us who the f*** we were banging in their door so early. By this time, he was joined by his wife, so I responded that we were the people that had brought their children home.

Lots of looks of surprise, shock and confusion on their faces, and a moments silence followed by lots of shouting about who hadnt locked the door the evening before then ensued.

Then finally, a very grudging 'thanks' followed by the door being slammed in our faces.

What lovely people! How very lucky they were that it was us that found those kids. The very thought of the whole episode still makes my blood boil, and equally fills me with dread at the thought of would could have been.

I'm sure the parent of April must be absolutely beside themselves, and I genuinely hope that she is found alive, but as has already been said, what the hell was she doing out alone after dark?!?!?
 
Perhaps it's time the Government considered re-introducing the simple public information films that they used to show on TV many years ago? You know the kind of thing I'm on about.... 'Watch out there's a thief about', 'Don't talk to strangers', 'How to ride a bike', 'How to cross the road', 'How to park a car' and simple parenting stuff?

I recently went camping with my wife and sister in law, plus her two kids.. One is 3 and one is 5.

Now I'm not a kiddy person and don't really understand ages.. I dont know when kids start to walk, or talk and I don't really know about what ages kids are safe to be a bit more independent

I was brought up very strictly. I wasn't even allowed in the front garden of the house unsupervised until I was about 12. I wasn't allowed to the park down the end of the road until I was about 13.

Now the 3 days I spent with my 5 year old nephew made me realise quite quickly, there is absolutely no reason, and no possible excuse that could mean its acceptable to let a child of that age out on roads unsupervised.
I'm my view, any parent found to be letting a child of that age to roam the streets, should instantly have that child removed from their care.

We get it all the time on our street. Kids from all over the area seem to congregate on our road. Some of them are still wearing nappies.. The parents are nowhere to be seen, and don't appear to give a damn where the kids are or what they are doing.
It's an absolute disgrace.

mind you while its easy to point the finger at the poor all illeducated , in being too 'king stupid to look after the kid , this kind of thing is found in all sectors of society - look at the mcanns for example
 
Exactly, you don't need to be a stereotypical benefits scrounger to be incapable of looking after your kids.
I always said the Mcanns should have faced legal action.
Their daughter going missing was tragic, but she shouldn't have been left in the situation where it could happen so easily.

I'd be in more trouble with the police than they got in if I left my dog in the car on a hot day...
 
quite - june this year I found a 6 year old on his own on the beach - after checking that the parents were nowhere to be found I brought him back to the ranger base as per procedure for lost kids. After a full search of the area for the parents had come up blank I actually had the phone in my hand to call the policer when the parents turned up (iin a big black shiny merc)

Turns out they'd left him to play on the beach while they went for a meal in a local resteraunt :cuckoo: - I had several things to say about the lack of sense this displayed , only to be met with " well it turned out okay so theres no harm done is there ? " :bang:

leaving aside stranger danger and all that this is 'king beach - with tides, and rockpools, and boulders - argggggghhhh :annoyed:
 
Pete, how did you know they were the parents? I assume you went by the response of the child. I'd be interested in what your procedures say about such circumstances (I now realise I have a client that might need something similar), whether you take proof of name, address from the parents, whether you automatically involve the police, etc.

You could point out your view without resorting to personal insults.

I think that comment was tempered by the fact that many times the police have used these appeals to catch out the family member involved. The sobbing appeals that later turn out to be false.

Interesting the fact came out today that the child has cerebral palsy and needs medication.

As for the parenting, many cases reported often have separated parents with different partners. I often wonder if that's a factor or just a reflection on today's society.

I think it just reflects more on todays society personally, separation is far more common these days, it used to be rare to hear of parents divorcing or separating but now it just seems the norm, relationships don't seem to last as long as they used to for whatever reason.

This sounds remarkably similar.

Several years ago I was fishing from a fairly remote beach when the tide started to come in. I decided it was time to walk back to the main beach.

I noticed a boy (around 5 years old) who was playing in the rock pools. The tide was coming in fast and he'd have been cut off in minutes and then drowned.

As there was no adult nearby I asked where his parents were. He answered that he didn't know.

I picked him up and carried him back to the beach (a good 5 minute walk) asking him to point out his parents.

Eventually he saw them and pointed to them.

When I got within a few yards and explained what had happened the mother simply said -

"Oh, I wondered where he'd got to"

Reading some of these personal stories members have posted up just leaves me stunned and angry at the attitude of some of these parents. Has parental common sense dropped since the millenium or something, or do parents genuinly think that it will never happen to them?

What annoys me even more are the ones that claim they live in a safe well respected area where there are no nasty people and they can leave their doors unlocked at night.

I just want to shake these people and tell them to wake up and grow some common sense. This isn't the 1950's anymore where crime was rearely heard about. and your protected safe little village does not have a forcefield that deflects criminals and undesirables. Burglars, pedos and other nasties are free to walk any part of the uk as they so wish and can strike anywhere. By living in a state of false security and ignorance is what makes these people get burgled and have their kids taken by perverts.

I just saw the google map of where april jones was taken and where her house was, it was almost 4 football fields in distance and a completely seperate street away. It looked to be almost a 10 minute walk home, that is just too damned far for an uspervised 5 year old who has cerebal palsy and 7.30 at night when most kids her age are in bloody bed
