Evening all,

I'm starting another college course and one of my subjects will be architecure photogrpahy. As well as producing my own images I have to find 10 photographers and then critique 30 of their photos each and use them as inspiration for my own work.

I'm a bit lost to be honest. I've never done architecture before, I could have done portraiture but I understand the benfit of doing something completely different and out of my comfort zone. Problem is I don't know of any well known architecture photographers never mind 10. I had a look on Flickr and there's some great stuff but I got fed up because the good stuff is so hard to find amongst the dross.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some inspiring photographers please. In an ideal world most or at least some of them will be film photographers. I know that will come across as snobby or something to some out there but if I know they're shooting in a similar way to me and with similar gear it's easier for me to relate to their work than some photoshop genius with £30k of digital MF because my work won't even be vaguely similar.

Cheers,
Kev

Maybe google something like: 'Fine Art Architecture Photography', you may find something interesting there, alot of names pop up and I remember stumbling across an awesome black and white film photographer who shot landscapes and architecture on a similar search, but, I had booked marked it on my older system and since burnt it down for my lady to use :bonk: His name was something similar to Dave Black but it's not the Dave Black is a sports shooter. :bonk:

Five living architectural photographers of significant note: Norman McGrath, Dan Winters, Richard Payne, Robert Polidari, and Timothy Hursley.

From madly doing a search, but also somthing I am interested in.

Architectural photography is not necessarily getting the whole building in, but sometimes concentrating on the details, like arches, door ways etc in medevall churches, od the structure and decor on the outside of builds.
Also you have the various movements within Architecture like Gothic, Modenest, Post Modenist and a few others :D

Great links! Cheers very much!

If you want a theme, there's the Donald W. Muggeridge Collection of Mill Photographs.

Googling the images may be more fruitful than looking through the Kent Uni website, but seek the permission required for your usage.

Michael Kenna's 6x6 architectural is always interesting and beautiful.
He shoots a lot of scapes too so he's not a specialist, but if you're looking for one, off the beaten track sorta speak, check out his pages, but you'll have to sift he doesn't have an architectural gallery as such.
Also, there's a lot of personal background info about him that might prove useful.

Have a look at the MPA Kev, they have a section for architectural photographers. Should have some web links for you.

This chap has been commissioned to shoot the redevelopment of Kings Cross Station. I've seen some of his work at HM Treasury building, but that's not available to the public. I can say that it's stunning and that he is as mad as cheese. :)

This place rules:thumbs: Thanks everyone, plenty of reading there. I've only looked at one so far which is the Mark Power site and I'm in awe. I'd love to have ideas for projects like the shipping forecast, that project is a great idea.

I'm definately seeing that architecture photography is just as much if not more, about the patterns, lines, shapes and tones within a building and not just documenting it's outline. Unfortunately it does kind of show up my original plan as being a very weak one. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Better to redraw the plan at the beginning rather than the end though :)
