Are 10-22 and 55-250 lenses a practical combo?

Hi folks,
I have a Canon 550D and a dead kit lens which leaves a bit of a dilemma.
I already have a 10-22 and love it, but that and the 18-55 kit lens were my only lenses.

I thought about a 'better' direct alternative to the kit lens, perhaps a Tamron 17-50.

Then I thought for about the same money, a kit lens + a Canon 55-250 would give me more range. I've been considering a longer zoom for a while anyway.

Finally, I thought why not just get a 55-250 and forget the kit lens?

I shoot a variety of street shots, car stuff and landscapes so I think I might be able to get away with just a 10-22 and 55-250.

It leaves a reasonable-sized gap in my range, but as the kit isnt exactly the pinnacle of lenses, is it even worth getting a replacement, or should I get the IMO much better 55-250 and survive without the kit lens?

A random pair of lenses to have I guess, but a workable if not perfect pair. What do you think?
 
The 55-250 IS is a good lens for the price. You can pick up a second hand one very reasonably . I use mine a lot and get what I consider some good pictures out of it.

You could also pick up another 18-55 IS cheaply too if you think you need it later, or even a nifty fifty if you want. There's a big jump in price for something better, depends on your budget.

Or add a 35mm prime to fill in the gap as well as cover you for low light and street photography?
 
The 55-250IS lens is a great lens for the price and certainly worth looking at getting ...

With regards to the 18-55 range - it is a useful range and worth having - you can pick up a very good 2nd hand one relatively cheaply.

Have a look at your photos and did you use this lens / focal range much ?

If funds allow, I'd be tempted to upgrade (ideal opportunity now if yours is dead) the 18-55 range lens and maybe looking at getting the 55-250 say later in the year (or now if funds allow).
 
I replaced my kit lens with a Sigma 17-70 a couple of years ago. I've kept my kit lens stored, just in case, but haven't had any cause to use it. I may be up for selling it. Would need to check what prices they go for. If you are interested, let me know (probably best to PM me) and I will put it up on the For Sale board so we keep it all official.

Hope that's not contravening anything. Just trying to be helpful.

To answer your question, I thought about going on holiday once with just my 10-22 and 70-300, but glad I didn't as I would have really missed the range in between, and I would not want to be without my walkabout lens.
 
how about a nice canon 28-105mm USM II i have one and its probaly the most used lens i have, its cheap i got mine for around £100 and covers a nice range on a crop body, and with (proper) USM it has very quick AF. the 55-250mm is a nice lens used a friends one the other day, but the not having 22-55mm is a useful focal length to not have. the 28-105mm should cover most situations, and a bit extra reach over kit lens. HTH :)
 
You'll definitely miss that 23-55mm range on a crop buy another cheap kit lens with is, if money allows buy the excellent 17-55 f2.8 or as also suggested get a fast prime in the range


There always the 18-135mm if you want more range in just one lens

I ended up getting a bit drunk and buying a 55-250 for a really cheap price on Amazon anyway and I'm now looking out for a second hand kit lens. Seems the original question might be answered, "You can't cope without a kit lens!"
