Are Cokin going bump?

Hi,

Does anyone know what the situation is with Cokin, are they going out of business or do they just have really poor stock control and manufacturing processes?

I ask because having decided a month ago to go for the Cokin Z-Pro mount and some ND Grads all together in their U960 kit I have tried without success to source the kit.

The usual suspects like Warehouse Express and Jessops show them on ‘back order’ and have done for a month at least. I even contacted them both today, neither could give me an estimate of when they would get stock. Warehouse Express even said they have 10 customers waiting on back orders..

My experience is that there's stuff in their catalogue that you just can't get hold of and that's been the state of things since I started buying them, or rather since I started attempting to buy them.

I have cancelled orders with two suppliers over the last five weeks as I can't get hold of a P121M, probably one of their most popular filters. Warehouse Express was one of the suppliers, and yes has shown on back order for weeks. Definately something wrong.

I had issues getting a few cokin filters a few years back, I was told by 2 different retailers that the Cokin Factory closes for a period of time (6-8 weeks as I recall) resulting in delays on products after that until production is back up to full speed and back orders cleared.

I seem to recall that this was Aug/Sept time, so it could still be the knock on effect from this.

I know how annoying it is, I too was after the P121M and ended up waiting weeks.

Cokin are a French company and a fair amount of French industry shuts down for a period in August. There have also been some stoppages over there in protest against the raising of the retirement age to 62.

Also, while we all regard photographic equipment as anecessity, in the grand scheme of things, it's not. So, things like filters are made in relatively small batches, possibly when they (Cokin) know that the whole batch can be converted into money (ie sold) fairly quickly. I would expect they produce A and P size filters far more often than they do the Z size.

Good luck in your search.

I know the point your making Nod but I don't see my Photo gear as a necessity, more like an itch I have to scratch  and its just poor business practice to leave customers to go to rival suppliers because of poor production management.

Now wher did I put that Lee catalogue :exit:

Don't stack Cokin ND Grads/ND filters. You'll end up with a horrible magenta picture.

If you think Lee are any faster, I have been waiting for 17 weeks for a set of soft grads from them, I paid Calumet for the whole order back in July.

I've never noticed this myself, I did read somewhere that the higher ND filter should be placed at the rear of the holder nearest the camera. so if you wanted ND8, ND4 and ND2 mounted together then you'd mount them in this order (from the camera).

Not sure the magenta colouration is the reason behind it, but I read it once and have stuck with it ever since, although I seldom use more than one.
