Hi,

Sorry if this has been covered, I've done a search and everything was Canon related - TV/AV etc, I'm using a Nikon (don't hold it against me :D)

I'm hoping to be going to a local outdoor Kart track over the weekend, to practice motorsport shots.

I've been taking a look through the manuals and would like someone to confirm if the settings below will be a good starting point?

Nikon D5000
Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED or Kit lens

Focus Mode: Auto Servo or Continuous Auto Servo
AF Mode: Single Point (centre)

Shutter: 1/320'ish
Aperture: f8
ISO: 200/400

Luck: Bucket loads :help:

Cheers
Paul.

It all depends on the conditions on the day. Personally I'd shoot in shutter priority mode and let the camera decide which aperture to use. You may have to bump that ISO up a bit if it's overcast but if you wanted the specific settings as you stated, go full manual and see what the meter says, then bump the ISO if/as necessary and away you go.

That should be fine to sort of freeze the action, but if you want some stylish shots your gonna have to go lower and pan. This will get sharpish point of focus and blur the background.
Good luck

Yeh, forgot to say, I'll have it in shutter priority, just thought f8 would give a decent DOF. Then again the whole idea is to practice panning shots so I guess the background will be blurred anyway....:bonk:

Will, I'll be hoping to get some more dramatic shots so a slower shutter? 1/250-160?
I think it'll take a good few shots before I get a kart in shot at all but you've got to start somewhere :)

The main thing is that you've bought the right camera for the job...
