Hey guys n gals,

Not posted on the forum for a while (family etc), however...I have recently upgraded my camera and finally got an SLR.

I have purchased a Canon 300D with the 18-55 lens.

However I feel the lens isn't great for what I want.

I like shooting landscapes and zooming in. I also like doing macro and action shots.

So my question is what lens/es will do the above?

I have also come across the macro extension tubes are these any good or just a gimmick, I rarely shoot macro and thought about getting some instead of a dedicated macro lens.

That's going to be quite a list.

Priorities? Budget?
 
Macro tubes work fine, but they do cut down the light reaching the sensor.

lens wise the 18-55 should be fine for landscape shots, but for action/wildlife etc I would have thought something like the 55-250 canon would be a good idea.
 
Thanks for the replies, as for budget something not silly expensive. I would say a couple of hundred per lens, I don't mind second hand either if the condition is very good.

I rarely get out with the camera so don't want to be sat on 3k's worth of lenses that won't get the use they would deserve.
 
50mm 1.8 and a 55-250 IS are the one i would get if i had the money.

I have a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and it's a great general purpose lens and it can focus quite close too, to 0.27m throughout the zoom range so although being a bit of a Jack of all trades and not being a true macro it's still useful for close up shots.
 
One thing at a time, I would get a Canon 55-250 for about £180 which will sort out the longer range stuff. That works well with a Raynox DCR-250 macro converter for £35 (Amazon).

See how that goes, then consider upgrading the 18-55. But until then, it has a very usable range. Maybe consider upgrading to the newer IS version of that lens which is much better and still very affordable at around £120. Keep an eye on the for sale section here.
 
Cheers for the responses, unfortunately I have had to send the camera back.

It was a little faulty, the mirros/sensor was absolutely filthy, and the auto-focus didn't work correctly, it focused to a point then went blurred when you took the shot.

I am getting a refund and will have around £250 to spend on one so keep an eye out for a "What Camera on a budget" thread :lol:
 
i am selling my eos 400d with canon grip on here £300 but open to offers.
