Argos lens canon

For the money it's very good. Focus can be a little slow compared to higher end lenses and it's not as well built but it's a fast, sharp lens at a good price. I have one and wouldn't sell it on unless I replaced it with another lens costing a lot more.

The 50mm f/1.8 (often referred to as the nifty fifty) is a good lens for the money, though it can divide opinions.

Build wise, it's not the strongest lens and has a plastic mount. Some consider the AF to be excessively noisy and the manual focus ring, if you need to focus manually, is quite small. Others don't like the bokeh produced by this lens, which results from the minimal number of aperture blades (5 I believe.)

Those are the negatives. On the plus side, it has a maximum aperture of 1.8, which can be useful when shooting in low light situations, or you want to achieve good subject/background separation. It's also a sharp lens, which surprises a few people given it's relatively low cost.

If you want further information/opinions, just search on this forum for nifty fifty and you will find loads of threads. It is a good lens, but it has it's naysayers due to the negative points I have listed above.

ETA: If you want to see sample images taken with this lens, have a look here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1059085&page=249
Yes, I know it's another forum, but TP doesn't have an equivalent thread.

ok thanks for your view's,as im limited on funds, and new to all this i think i might get it,and see how i get on with it. thanks again

We get the same stock answers about the nifty fifty every time, it's very good for the money (which is true) but so is a Savage 110 bolt action rifle. The thing is I have no use for a rifle so to me it would be a waste of money.

The same thing with the nitty fifty, it's only good value if you going to use it, so I would ask why do you want one over what ever lens you have now.

I would assume if he plans to buy one its because he wants to use it... That usually is the reason people but lens isn't it?

I'm not sure why you are using a comparison to a rifle when the dude just wants to make sure he's not wasting his limited funds on a lens from Argos and could get something better for around same price!

A yes that's good value or no better going here.. Etc would be what I would hope for if I asked said question :-)

What I'm saying is that many things are good for the money, but that's not a reason to buy them.

I'm assuming the OP wants said lens so if its good for the money then EVERY reason to but it!... Yes? :-)

I only ever hear good things about that lens but be aware Argos is expensive. I bought a lens on the internet for £110 and it cost £250 in Argos.

Urrgh yes so true! Although that said the 50mm does look reasonable! Suprisingly lol!

I was looking at buying a lens from Argos 50 mm f1.8 11, to go with my 6ood, is this lens any good???.

Have a look on Camerapricebuster as has been said and see how they are price wise.

If they're within a few ££'s and its local to you, then yes get one.

The 50mm f1.8 is a cheap lens, but is a good lens and certainly worth buying if you're going to use it. Be careful you don't fall I to the trap of "you need one of these".

well if i wasnt going to use it i wouldnt ask about it!!!!. all i was doing was to be pointed in the right direction and some advice..i wasnt asking about old weapon systems and personally i perfer a 7.62!!!.thank u to those that have given me constructive views

I don't remember what the criteria is for accessing the classifieds on the forum now, but you often get these lenses up for sale on here and usual going price is between £60-70.

Hdew cameras have the same lens for £80 http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-ef-50mm-f18-ii-229-p.asp but then you'd have to factor in P&P. One Stop Digital have it for £74.41 + P&P http://www.onestop-digital.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=33321 and MPB Photographic have it at £74 + P&P but they're second hand lenses but they still have some warranty and MPB are a great company to buy from. Of course, if you get it from Argos and they're local to you, there'll be no headaches about returning it if it should go wrong.

It's £89.99 at Argos. I wouldn't say it's worth saving £20 buying used.

I had this lens, and it took really sharp photos but the build quality and noisy motor+it's an odd focal range on a crop sensor just meant that more often than not it stayed in the camera bag!! Best off picking up a second hand 1 for £50-£60!! Then if you don't like it you'll be able to sell for not much if any loss!!
