I have the 450d
I have the kit zooms - 18-55 and 55-250 , both IS but EFS

I have a 35mm EOS 3

in Canon EF I have the
50/1.8
22-55/4-5.6USM
28-90/4-5.6
80-200/4.5-5.6

I also have a few decent old primes with adapters which I can use in manual mode
28/2.8
Zeiss 50/1.4
135/2.8
250/4

I'm not into wildlife or sports.
I am into lanscapes, buildings, cars, drag racing, reportage maybe

I would like to replace my zooms, esp the longer ones, with IS ones at some point

I want better images(more detail at print size A2 A1 etc ) and a wider FOV


Considering the Canon 10-22 and keeping the 450

also considering selling the 450 and ef-s lenses and getting a used 5D MK 1 which will widen things up for me to match the 35mm. will cost around an extra £300 ish after I sell the 450/ef-s

what is the 5D MK1 like ???? better than the 450d ?

I dont want to spend £500 on the 10-22 only to find I go FF anyway !

without any decent glass (except some old primes) what would I see the most improvement with ... the 5D or new glass

I'm at the 'early' stages , equipment wise, so don't want to get 'trapped' with cropped lenses

help !!!! please :D

Your 450d has the 1.6x crop in it, ideal for wildlife and sports, the 5d is full frame and sounds like its more suited to what you do. IMO
 
I was in a similar position.

I had:

400D
Sigma 10-20
Sigma 150 macro
Canon 50 1.8
Sigma 17-70

I then sold most of it and now have

Canon 5D Mk I
24-70L
Canon 50 1.8


I have seen a massive improvement in my photos. I agree that glass > body in terms of upgrades, but somewhere you have to draw the line and realise that an upgraded body IS a good idea.

In my opinion, sell up, get the 5D Mk I. You won't be disappointed. All of my recent photos in my Flickr (link in sig) are with the 5D Mk I.
 
My suggeestion would be to slim down the lenses and get some decent EF glass. Especially as you have a lot of duplicated focal lengths, I would advice glass before body anyday.
 
5D without a shadow of a doubt. It's image quality will blow you away. You can always upgrade glass at a later date.

Do it, you will not regret it!
 
I would suggest the 5D and either the 16-35mm f2.8L This lens may even do on your 450D or maybe the 50D and would give you about 25mm (mk1 lenses can be had for about £600 and the mk2 at maybe £800) or 24-70mm f2.8L, you will love the glass and wonder how you ever lived without it.

Dont worry about IS, with the type of photography you are into I would consider a good tripod as essential and your camera should live on it.
 
Upgrading the body will give some improvement in results. However higher quality lenses will give far bigger improvements, I would always invest more in lenses than the body.

Also lenses change very little where as there is a new body about every 18 months. My 5 year old 70-200 L is near enough identical to a brand new one.

The above may be true, but the image quality from Canon's full frame sensor far surpasses that of the 450D. It is a big jump in quality and given that the OP still has some useable lenses for the 5D, I would suggest it is well worth it.

The nifty fifty + 5D is a combo made in heaven.

The OP also wants wider FOV. Without resorting to an overpriced superwide, moving to a 5D will get better results immediately from existing lenses in his collection.

Personally, I see this as a no brainer.

yehbut ... the lens I am after next, wont fit the FF body !

x2 on everything said there. :thumbs:

Once I have two L glass lenses that I need (24-105, 70-200), I will then be upgrading to a 5d Mk2 for FF goodness.


As a side note, there are a couple of 5d's at my work and they really are superb but the lenses used with them are low-end Canon ones and IMO the cameras IQ is nowhere near as good as its capable off.
 
to get another view point ... I've started another offshoot thread , purely on the bodies only


thanks for all your input so far ... seems split both ways ... but those that have made the switch seem well pleased !
