I think I was ok till I joined this forum. I might need to get the mods to block me from the classifieds!
 
I definitely suffer with GAS... I was just trying to work it out and since getting my first DSLR in (I think) late 2005 I have been through at least 21 DSLRs, 15 CSCs and many compacts! Also over 40 lenses for my Canons and numerous flash, bags and bits... Add into hat my love of binoculars, telescope and watches and I really do have a problem.

Im terrible, i buy everything just to try it out then sell it on,on occasion i buy the exact same item several times, i love the Tamron 24-135 and have owned it on 5 seperate occasions

I was thinking I can't believe people would do this (:nono: ) but then the 'penny dropped' with me (I's deluded :nuts: ) but on a much smaller scale & with low end stuff. Last year I bought a Panasonic G3 but sent it back but then bought again from a different source a few months later - received it & thought what the hell have I just done so sent that back.

Then I bought a Fuji X10 but sent it back & succumbed after a month or two & bought one from the Fuji refurb store but sold that after a few months.

Oh yes it happened a few other times eeeek - do I need a shrink.
 
I am continually buying and selling cameras, guitars, bicycle parts (my main 3 interests)

The major reason behind it is the ease of selling them (I use eBay alot) and the ease of buying them (online shops). So again, the internet is to blame!

If I couldn't buy or sell so easily I doubt my activity would be anywhere near the level it is today.


The reason behind it all is pretty clear though, the constant seeking of fulfilment through material objects - any buddhist will be able to tell you where you are going wrong with that...

Suffer from it a bit here too. Not near asmuch as others, but bad enough that I have used bill money or savings to buy some piece of gear, used it half a dozen times then decided to sell it on. Luckily, I very rarely lose much on re-selling, and most times that money goes back in the kitty - other times it'll go on something I actually want or need.

I suspect you are right. I know that one of the reasons that I keep buying and selling gear is that the fun of a new toy is great but it certainly isn't a long term solution to depression! I do find that no matter how many reviews and opinions you read nothing can beat using a camera/lens in a real world situation to see what it is really like. Thankfully good lenses tend to hold value well so you can buy, try and sell on with at little net expense, it only get's expensive when you like them and keep them! As with other posters above I find that I have bought and sold the same lens on more than one occassion (I have had 3x 300 f4s and suspect I will end up with another).

My wife is just as bad as I am but in different hobbies. At least it means we don't have to explain things to each other and get into any silly squabbles about who is the biggest waster :).

The infernal cycle
Those who bought the x100 quickly felt limited because of the lack of interchangeable lenses. Those who bought the X-pro felt limited because they do not have one more lens. When they get them all and then it will feel limited because of how small APSC is. They also feel limited by the dynamic range of digital. They buy a Fuji 6×9 (superb camera) and then they feel limited because it’s too big, and limited because of the lack of feedback from film….then go back to digital. It’s a infernal cycle that will never stop if we don’t put a break to it. The story above would have been my rationalization if I went with a X100. It’s a cycle, you always find a criticism for a camera and somehow end up with a camera similar to you original one.

I'm sick of seeing camera gear I don't actually need but want. Sometimes I just can't help myself!
I think the MODS should be more responsible and ban members from the classifieds when the users get too many ratings! :D
 
At the moment I seem to be buying for ever more manual legacy lenses.

I think this is ok as my little collection doesn't add up to the cost of one high end modern AF lens and they dont even take up much space as they all fit in a biscuit tin.

There's an easy way! On the main forum index page, look at the classifieds section banner and at the far right, there's a pair of chevrons ponting upwards - click on them and the section collapses so while you can see the banner, the actual section isn't visible. It's still there so you can get at it if GAS gets too bad or you actually NEED to look for something (or indeed if you want to sell something!)

As for GAS... Well, since deciding to reduce the SLR kit, I've bought a few compacts and a bridge to take on the duties and also bought a new macro lens and a new walkabout zoom. Both those were replacing kit which I either traded in or sold privately. I've also bought a superzoom (Tammy 18-270) for the D70 as a lightweight DSLR kit. It was 2nd hand at a price I couldn't resist! Then there's the bag for the D70 kit but that was a birthday present...
