Arty/different motorsport shots thread

I thought it might be interesting to start a thread where folk can post arty/different motorsport shots, rather than the usual panning/head on/car in paddock shots.

Many of get to the point where we feel we are taking the same shots every weekend, so I thought that having a thread where we post stuff that is "different" might help to give us all some inspiration the next time we are at the circuit.

Great composition and the mandatory arrow to tow eye makes the shot.

It's certainly a different motorsport picture but it's certainly a good picture and proves there's art and beauty in the sport :D

No idea how arty farty is good!

The idea is that by posting stuff that is different to the usual motorsport shots we all take, it will inspire people to try out some new ideas next time they are at a circuit. So by posting a different angle, composition or subject, it may trigger an idea for people to try next time out.

It needs people to post stuff other than me though, so please get posting!

But you made no sense

I really have no idea, how you can make that statement!

I will try and make it as simple as possible for you.

There is no problem with arty farty but the actual photos are not going to be any good!

.... In your opinion.

The words of your response (#4) were ambiguous, not just to me but to the OP Gary. I had hoped you weren't meaning to be so dismissive and also disrespectful to this thread and gave you the benefit of any doubt by asking (#5). But your two word response was abrasive.

So, if the photos here in your opinion "are not going to be any good!" why bother visiting this thread?

If you are having a bad day, why not come back when you are in a better mental state.

Wow thats a sweeping statement, do you mean they are not meeting your supposed and exacting technical standards or that you personally don't like the photographs.

Luckily for me the pictures I posted were well liked by the people whose cars I photographed and have done well in local photographic clubs competitions.

Perhaps you should take some advice from my grandma 'if you have nothing nice to say, best keep quiet'

You may take from this post that I am a little peeved at your presumptuous statement 'the actual photos are not going to be any good'

Just of to check any pictures you may have posted such that I might understand your stance........ otherwise have a nice day :)

I like both of yours @jamiewednesday, but I would probably have cropped them both a bit closer. The one with the kid and bloke with them as the subject and to the other one to show less of the guy on the left? I think you need to see him for context, but I think you could get away with showing less and allow the brain to fill in the blanks.

Couple of slow shots from Saturday

Escort 1:10th.jpg
Taken at 1/10th sec I kind of like the abstract nature of it, but looking maybe pick another place next time without the orange barrier behind. Its a Modified Ford Escort, if you were wondering.

Pleased with this one 15th this time.

I get these totally. Prefer the top image too.

For me, the arty ones are fine and yes all good with me as long as they are off the vehicles being used on the track and not cars/bikes parked up at a race meet as otherwise aren't they just transport shots? One of the best images I've seen on here is of a mechanic in the pits with a mirrored visor on his helmet and you see the great reflection in it. Really does say motor racing to me.

I'm not into motor racing so tend not to drop in on that threads but I was caught by some photos here, especially showing the people involved .. eg jamiewednesday's shots.

What you've done suggesting this thread is to think out of the box which is often what photography is about and to be encouraged and it's disappointing to see the criticism levelled at you by 'Mikesphotaes' not to mention the abrasive and condescending nature of it. Look past that, though, you've had good support from others.

Wow, that's a statement right there.... lol I assume what you actually mean is you don't like low shutter speed pans... because you know if you want all your photos devoid of artistic intent then I feel really bad for you

That shot of Checo still goes hard! Don't know what you were thinking with the last one though

How did you manage to this one?

In camera, post or a mix of both?

Not sure if it's considered 'different' but I'm a fan of combining panning with ICM to create motorsport images.

Absolutely love this style of shot. Have no idea how to achieve it but it looks amazing

A shakey arm and a healthy measure of disregard for quality control.
I’m planning on doing a kinda guide to these as I get asked about them a lot.
Will post something on my insta when I get some chance after the next event. Glad you like em mate

I rest my case!

it’s lucky then that you’re not the arbiter of taste, that’s one of the few shots I’ve made money from and it’s picked up a couple of placings in competitions. I guess it all remains subjective though, however for somone that comments a lot you don’t post much to give us an insight into your own level of ability… I think if you’re going to leave such brief sweeping statements on posts you should be a little more mindful of how they will be perceived by new comers and how they might be discouraged as a result…
You don’t have to be the grumpy old troll come out, share your motorsport pictures, we might even be able to help you be creative
