Hello, I am looking at working towards something like the ARPS in documentary or travel photography next year. I really want something to focus my photography and give it a big push to improve the work I am doing. I'm not sure if my work is at the standard required yet but you can judge that: http://jacobjamesphotography.co.uk. What I wanted to know is has anybody on here done this or a similar thing from another body? I am planning a four month photographic trip to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam next year so I will have plenty of opportunity to get the images I need to hopefully achieve it. Any comments would be gratefully recieved :)

Jake

You need to PM Jamesoliverstone. He got awarded the ARPS when going for the LRPS and has either just done, or is still in the middle of, a photography trip out there.

Look up his portraits from Africa whilst you're at it!

Thanks, glad you found it useful! Happy to answer any questions you may have, although I'd strongly advise getting an experienced mentor.

The only thing I did notice was the apparent high hidden costs of doing it. If you need to buy a printer/prints etc it could run easily into hundreds of pounds and I think I would struggle to afford that at the moment

A lot of mycosts were around the printing as I ended up buying my own A3 printer to take control of the prints as I struggled to get what was on my screen from a commercial printer - no point spending hours in photoshop to get it looking just right only to have the finished print look nothing like. But inkjet printing of monochrome is another can of worms entirely!
But yes there are the costs of application, mounting, print boxes and shipping if you canot attend in person to factor in as well.

Ironically most of my work is in monochrome :bang:

Apologies for my late reply here, I have been away from the forum with serious family issues.

I am back now, and if you need any help whatsoever, feel free to PM me. Also, I am quite happy to chat to you over the phone about the process if you just want to chew the fat :)

Also, I might be able to offer some advice on photographing and travelling in Cambodia, as it can be challenging at times

Hello James,

Your help is most appreciated, I will PM you in the next day or so. A bit tired at the moment so I will spend some time tomorrow thinking it through

Is that Chew Yun-Fat?????

Wasn't he a dodgy martial arts actor in the 80's? :D
