Excellent shot Darren (y) Where was this taken and what exposure? was it a tracked shot etc ..?

Holy cow. That's amazing! Wish I could do something like this.

Anyone can do this kind of shot (y)

This was taken whilst I was at Prescott Hill climb on a friday night. Its comprised of 10images stacked together so a 5minute exposure. It's not a tracked shot (y)

Thought I'd add this one aswell which has been shot at a higher ISO

This was shot with a Nikon D300, Sigma 10-20mm and stacked in deepskystacker (as someone mentioned) then processed in Photoshot CS5 manually (y)

Fantastic! Though you seem to have a smear of something across the centre of your sensor ;)

Great stuff Darren, i've got into photographing the night sky too recently and just posted up a thread of my own in this section with my latest timelapse video of the night sky.

Very nicely done Darren  Superb dust detail along the plane of the galaxy. I'm guessing that was low in the south ?? It looks like Sagitarius and towards the core of the galaxy.

Jen and Phil, Have a look at this tutorial... http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=104518

Phil, you're not really that far from me, and I know a fair few others in the area producing deep sky images... the 450d will do a pretty good job...

Ahhh that explains the slighty oval stars.. excellent shots though.

You can make a fairly inexpensive scotch/ barn door mount for basic tracking, or get a purpose designed head (astro trac) thats designed for camera tracking if the bug really bites.

I would also recommend getting Noel Carboni's excellent action set, he does several but the main one for astrophotography is the astronomy tools set, which has included actions to round stars and several to deal with excessive noise.
He also does an excellent DSLR set.
