Burghley Horse Trials

I'm thinking of going on Saturday for the xc. I've never been before and was just wondering, how far is the parking away from the course, I know the course goes around the grounds but it would be nice if my car wasn't miles away from the course.

Is there the opportunity to get any front on shots, rather than side shots?
Is there just the one big water jump? and if so, can you park near there?
Oh, and am I liable to be falling over other photographers????

Will my lens be long enough to get in reasonably close? (70-200 + 1.4).

Any other tips etc appreciated. Hopefully, I'll have a nice little trolley to strap things to such as flask, picnic, small deckchair.;). I'll also take a rain cover for camera and lens.

Obviously, I'll take a mac, good footwear etc.

Oh, and I've left it too late to get the cheaper prices on the web so I'll have to pay on the gate.

Many thanks.

From what I can remember the cross country course is miles from the car park  I was absolutely pooped that lat time I went and that was without carrying gear around.

As for lens yours should be o.k. and most of the fences I saw were side on (that is if you could get near them)

My advise go very early and get to a fence where you want to be and stay put.

Have a nice day.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. The parking sounds rubbish, you'd think when you pay £10 to park, you might at least be near the course. Was it really really busy then when you went?

I think the gates open at 7.30 but the xc starts at 11am. I was planning to get there around 7.30-8am

We queued for ages to get in and park right down at the bottom they may have changed it but if you get there for that time you should be o.k.

Yes it was busy thousands of people.

Have a great day

Ermm, there are going to be about 60-80,000 people there on XC day, so dependent on your arrival time, you may well end up some distance away. Don't forget that £10 only covers the car, it is also £24 per head on Saturday, unless you have booked in advance, but that's still not a bad price for a top level international sports event.

Having said that it shouldn't be more than ¼ mile away at the very most.

You basically have two choices. There are 82 runners, most of which should make it to the XC phase; either pick a fence and stick to it all day having got there early enough to bag a prime spot (09:00-09:30ish), or travel round and try to get a couple of decent frames per fence. Apart from the primary fences, the crowd is fairly fluid but you won't necessarily get a decent angle with this (the latter) method. However if you are not there exclusively for photography, and it's your first time, I would try to see a horse over as many of the obstacles as possible.

You can plan what you want to see by looking at the track, and each individual fence here:

Burghley really doesn't do large water in the same way the Badminton does any more, but the Trout Hatchery is probably the best known fence (and also the water to boot); the Cascades and Leaf Pit are also good value.

Above all enjoy it and make the most of the day!

There will be more than 82 runners

There will be more than 82 runners

Care to explain how you work that out?

There is one CIC**** class that had a total of 110 entries and 28 W/D's, which according to BDWP @ 17:48 last night gave 82 runners.

Went last year on the Sunday. We worked out we walked about 8 miles all in all:cool:

What about the Dubarry young event horse entries? or do you not get to see them?

Not on The XC phase you wont.

They only compete in Dressage and SJ.

Edit:
And that's run on the Friday!
