I'm gunna try baiting up a really quiet area if my local wildlife area its just oposit my horses field so I'm up there often but was wondering what was the best food to put out to entise the birds to come out any idears?

I dunno if you can get em over here as I have not looked but back in Canadastan my folks are avid birders and they buy assorted bird seed that comes in these net kinda things that they hang from trees in the back yard. Lotsa birds!

The offer of a few lagers and a curry usually works around here :D

My wife got me one of those garden feeders so that I coud try my hand at photographing birds. Theres not been one bird on it in 3 months.lol.

They dont like nuts, and seeds anymore.

Several have commented elsewhere on the forum that this year has been so mild that few birds are being drawn to feeders in several areas of the country.

What sort of "wildlife area" are you talking about? The species you might attract depend on the habitat, and the food to use depends on the species you want to attract.

Being new to attracting birds I have been experimenting with different food and the most successful have been meal worms, fat balls, peanuts & kibble nuts. They also like apples.

As Alastair has said what you feed depends on what your trying to attract, I believe that most birds like fat balls, meal worms and kibble nuts so might be worth trying those first.

But if your leaving food out leave them some water as well.

When I was out and about earlier I saw a fair few flies etc, so I think they are prefering insects still at the moment, when it gets colder or if there is snow they should be attacking the feeders again.

Have noticed what peeps have been saying about birds disappearing from feeders as mine did go quiet but are now good and busy again but with different birds, from dozens of gold and green finch with a smattering of tits and others to loads of chaffinch with mixture of others, they don't touch my suet balls but love sunflower hearts and mealworms (live ones go in a flash)

I agree with the above, leave an assortment of seed and maybe some fat balls, along with a drop of water, should bring the birds in.

:)

I've had a selection of feeders in my gardne for a few years, sunflower seeds, nyger seeds, fat balls and peanuts, so a good selection. There have however been a big drop in both numbers and species in the last 12 months, no doubt some of the odd weather may have affected breeding and hence populations, though duckilings have appeared elsewhere in November, so things are certainly not normal.

its actully our locol secondary schools wildlife area its very natural as it has just really been left to its own accord i have seen lots of blue tits and many other little birds that i dont know the names of around there but they just dont stay for long there always there but they just kinda jump from tree to tree to quick to get a good picture of and then fly away so i was hoping to keep them around a bit,

i have borght a couple of coconut feeders one with seeds in and one with suet as they sell out really well at my work so im guessed they must work, im gunna give them a try and see how it goes
