Aurealis Borealis in Blighty?

I've been lucky enough to see them twice. Once whilst in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and maybe ten years ago sitting outside of my back door having a sly puff when I had supposedly given up.:D The sighting in Canada was the most spectacular though.

we had the northern lights this year..... first time in decades apparently

Saw them at Bridge of Orchy in Argyllshire in the early 70's. Been to the very north of Scotland countless times since then and never seen them.

Apparently they have been seen over the dark Fenlands of Cambridgeshire a good few years back. Maybe we'll get to see them again soon :)

Yeah it was only a couple of months ago we had a solar storm, apparently it's powerful sun waves that hit our atmosphere when the sun goes into a cooling period. Last time it was said to affect moblie phone signals and GPS systems and then we'd see northern lights from a distance but I think most of us missed it because it was cloudy :)

I saw them in the early 80's in Oxfordshire one very clear cold winter's night.

At first I thought it was some sort of car rally shining headlights into the sky but soon realised that was absurd!
The moving curtain fold effect in the sky was a brilliant display.

It was still observable as we neared Heathrow.
I'll never forget it,I'm sure my friends don't believe me.

You can sign up here (Lancaster University) and tey will email you alerts of high activity.

Common enough up here although they've been scarce the past few years. We've had two good displays so far this year so hopefully things are on the up again. They do appear further south although less frequently and you do need decently dark skies to see them properly.

I once attended a talk Mike Harlow gave on his trip to Alaska - specifically to see the Aurora. After many fantastic slides with a mountainous backdrop he switched to an equaly spectacular set, but with a housing estate in the background.

He'd arrived home from Alaska and within a few days was shooting the aurora from his home near Ipswich!
