Auto focus nikkon lenses

Im currently looking for a lens eg 70- 300 but i have found a few saying that they do not auto focus with the D40 although they are AF lenses, how will i know if they auto focus or not on the D40 before i buy ? Is there a chart saying which ones will auto focus ?

Thanks for that, so as long as the lens has a built in motor it will auto focus on my D40. I suppose having a built in motor makes them more expensive.

Yes, but if you go for the likes of the 55-200 AF-S VR (which was designed specifically for the D40) it's still quite affordable (£100 or so s/h and not much more new). The AF-S VR version of the 70-300 is a completely different beast from the older one and costs a fair bit more, but the difference between them is night and day.

15mm on the short end and 100mm on the long :lol:

Did you get the 55-200 or the 55-200 VR?

I figured you meant there is a difference between 55-200 and 70-300 was night and day., But after reading again, I was wrong, and it seems you meant the two versions of 70-300. I also tried the 70-300 when in china, but in the end didn't want a gap at the low end between it and my kit lens.

Got the 55-200 VR for £80 :-) Going back there in September to see what else I can find. The f2.8 24-70 was about £800, which is a good price, but beyond my budget at the time. If all goes well in China this time, maybe I will be able to afford it :-)

The 24-70 is a big lump of glass to put on a d40 - it weighs twice as much as the camera :lol:
 
I have a d5100, but you are right, it is a big chunk of glass. Plan on eventually upgrading to something more professional (I would love a d800, for example) and giving my current camera to my danger. But that depends on cash and my ability improving :-) So the next lenses I buy I want to be FX....
