Auto focussing

Hey guys,

Maybe you could give me some advice on this one.

If i set my lenses to AF when I take a shot I see the AF points through the view finder and they glow red when it locks onto a subject.
Now, the subject could be automatically chosen as 'the nearest the lens sees' or I can manually set the AF point at a certain chosen area. If I do this then anything else is not as sharp.

How do I set AF so that everything in view is in focus equally?

Ive tried before to turn the focus ring to infinity, but for some reason this is never as sharp as I would expect.

That's not so much a function of AF but Depth of Field Andy. Try googling hyperfocal distance and that may help.

^ What Ali says...

Can someone move this to the Basic section? Might get more uptake...

Also, as advised on another thread, go to the B&H Photography site, find the video section and search on Canon Autofocus - 3 lectures on how it works, how best to use it and its limitations. Very very useful.

Think it will be fine here. Not been here long so i'll check back later and move it then if response is low.

Back to the OP just one other thing to add... You are viewing things with the lens wide open. the aperture closes down to whatever you set it to only for the moment it takes the picture.
Press the depth of field preview button and you will see how things look at the camera settings not a wide open lens view.

press info screen, then press the top right hand button marked +magnifying glass. Now select af points with large wheel. 1 of 9, 9 or centre? simples.
