I noticed, after an update a few weeks ago, a slight pause before TP pages would open.

This morning I updated to the latest version of Avast and now there is a noticeable delay before a page opens.

I tried adjusting the various shields with no effect, but if I switch off Avast the pages load instantly.

Anyone else noticed this?


Anyway, for the moment, have dumped Avast and installed Avira.

Speed of page opening remains instant.
 
Also running 5.1.889 and a slight delay before pages load, but it's not a big deal at the moment. Maybe if I miss something on eBay it will be!
 
The update a few weeks ago was to version 6, so advise you to stay with 5 meantime.
 
Sounds like it's taking it's time live scanning web pages, you may be able to turn that feature off.

Running out of date AV is only slightly better than running none at all. They update for a reason.

If anyone is having problems with Avast, or for that matter any AV, contact their support directly first. Often they provide forums to get help with issues. With AV issues such as this, if you can't easily fix it, I would always advise changing AV to one that works and is up to date.

Avira and MSE are my favourites at the moment.

I don't use Avast on any of my own computers, so I don't know the specific details of this update. It may simply be bug/performance tweaks etc, but any update to the AV engine or databases are generally important.

if it was that important they could have automatically updated it seeing as i have that box ticked in the options :)
 
Avast are automatically updating the database with version 5, so it should be fine.
I just tried version 6 cos I am a nosey sod!

I agree with Hugh about the scanning but turning off all the numerous scans made no difference.

Avira was working fine but no email scanning on the free one, so now on the Noddy one for a wee while.

Yep, that's exactly why I went the Avira route, at first.

MSE does not support my OS.

I take it that was with the latest database?

My problem of slowness became really apparent with yesterday's update.

I was questioning the advice to not keep your AV up to date. "Don't update" implies turning off automatic update functions. Anyway, my advice isn't specific to this particular issue, but general AV advice.
