hi everybody.
I am new to photography and I need abit of advice.
What is the most succsessful way to take pictures abroad with a veiw to take more memory cards than you can shake a stick at or get someone to copy to cd.I am reluctent to take my laptop due to its size and airport regs, ect ect.
Has anybody got any other sujestions,

A bit confusing as to what you are actually asking for advice on?

Do you mean the best way for storage? Depending on how long you are going for, why not just take a couple of large capacity memory cards?

In the past I've just burnt to cd at a shop. Costs very little to do yourself.

Gooing for three weeks tenerife, Iv'e just got two 4gig and an 8gig. I suppose its all relative to how many photos I take.
One thing though without the laptop I can't veiw images day to day with a veiw to what i'm doing wrong to be able to correct my mistakes for the next day
thanks for the thoght all the same

Have any of you thought about buying a electronic photo frame for viewing photos ,

just a matter of getting one that accepts your card .

cheaper than a laptop and you will have continetal plug for place you are staying at ..
.ok not good for use in field .
but there may even be battery type out there it is just a thought ,as it would let you see at end of the day what to delete,
have one here that has onboard memory so can down load photos on to it if you need more room on your card

can't you just email the photos back to yourself each time you fill the card, then that frees up the card again?

I'm not sure what you're asking really, you want to view them at the end of each day on a laptop but don't want to take your laptop?

I think you either have to take the laptop or just look at them on the camera LCD. If you shoot raw then I don't think the picture frame will work unless you also shoot jpg but that will fill your cards quicker. You could get yourself an iPad. But why not just take the laptop.

I think you can get a connection kit for the ipad. Would that be any use?

You'd have a portable device, plus backup and the ability to view hour shots as you go.

Expensive method if backing up but you do get to use it for other things also.

Crazy idea. It would take ages and cost a fortune. Just bigger bigger CF cards!!

More CF Cards and view each days shots using your LCD screen. I would take a handful of 4GBs as if you have a huge card, all your eggs in one basket isn't a good idea.

I use 16G cards - as long as you use a reliable make you'll have no problems.

Think how many cards you can carry for the same weight and bulk of a laptop/notebook!

But if the OP wants to be able to see whether the pcitures already taken are any good then some viewing equipment is going to be required.

- more storage cards
- going with a netbook is a better idea, atleast you can see what photography you have taken.

I use a netbook - I can review the pics on a larger screen than the one on the back of the camera and can do some basic editting (using PSE2) and then send the pics to a printer to create individualised postcards (having bought the packs from 7dayshop, the eventual cost is actually cheaper than buying "proper" postcards). The netbook I have has a 60GB HDD in it which is plenty of space for storage and there are loads of small external HDDs available should you want more.

Yes, the above solution is more bulky and heavier than a quantity of memory cards but it does have its advantages for what I want to use it for!

When did it cost to sent emails? The time factor would make this a bit daft to do but the obvious answers to buy more cards or take a PC have been rejected,so with a free hotel PC I don't think it's that crazy of an option,to quote Sherlock Holmes "when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth",I myself would buy more cards.

Email isn't really designed for transferring files and most hosts have restriction of the amount of data you can send.

Something like
http://www.dropbox.com/

would be better, but the easiest solution is to take a lappy or buy more memory cards.

:bang: like I have just said the OP said he doesn't want to take his PC and buying memory cards seems also not to be an option as that would clearly be the answer here, and I would have thought the op would have considered that,so it does limit any suggests to imperfect ones, your suggestion to "take a lappy or buy some memory cards" is stating the two options that the OP has already discounted, mine whist not perfect is at least taking the OPs restrictions into account.

snigg, got to agree with you here. When not wanting to take the laptop and buying memory cards is not an option, the OP clearly doesnt want to spend any more money on cards or back up devices.

Only options that leaves is the email option, or even uploading to FLICKR.

OR

just take the laptop.

No other options i can think of.

You obviously don't send emails from abroad. You may get a free wifi connection - but you may have to pay for it - 3G also costs a bomb when you're abroad. Email is not designed for sending large files anyway - many email systems have a 10Meg limit - if the OP is shooting RAW he wouldn't even get one file per email. Email is a non starter in this situation. Any internet method is likely to be expensive from abroad.

I am off to america for three weeks this year and I am just stocking up on cards, i will be taking a lap top but my fear is that if the laptop gets broken or lost or stolen then I will have lost all the pics too.

I have put my laptop in my suitcase when I wnet to egypt last year with no problems, so i will be doing this again this year, trouble is if the case goes missing then so does all my pics hence lots of cards, I currently have 30gb worth and just bought 2 more 4gb ones and still going to buy more.

not sure any hotel based PC would connect by 3G?,guests own laptops in their room would most likely use wifi but as the OP would not have his laptop with him,I'm not sure why you mention 3G?,I also don't see where the free wifi connection comes in,again he has no laptop? so what use would a free wifi connection be?the US hotels I've stayed in all had a free PC for guests to use, like I keep saying the OP has all but discounted the best options and I myself would never think email was the prefered option but he has not really left many options, so given this, email is not "a non starter" as you state, telling the OP to spent more on memory cards was treating the OP as stupid and if the OP does not take his laptop or buys extra memory, then shooting in raw would be something he may have to give up if he wants to achieve all or part of his goal.

but hey why try and answer the OPs question,OP just buy more cards:cuckoo:

I find that 4X8gb card are enough for 2 weeks if I need more space I just go through my shots and weed out any bad ones, 4x8gb is a lot of photographs, if I needed more space I would take a portable storage device, I have taken my laptop but find I spend more time looking at photos than having a holiday.

I have tried to answer the OPs question - if you're not getting it that's not my problem - and I don't have the time or energy to spell it all out for you.

But you did have the time and energy to choose to pick at my post, when all I was trying to do was help the OP.

How about buy more cards. A cheap USB card reader and a higher capacity USB stick or external HD. You then should be able to use most pc's to view and transfer files the the storage device

No memory card can be guaranteed 100%. Some brands are more reliable than others, but all are liable to failure. As Kemble3 said, 'don't put all your eggs in one basket'. I card that can take 300-400 images if generally an good size. The capacity depends on your cameras average image file size.

When I go on holiday I take my laptop to back up the memory cards, but also to check for any problems not visible via the LCD, to hopefully let me go back and take a better shot. I try not to clear the cards until I need to as a secondary backup to the laptop. I recently come across a few new cards and so have 40GB of cards, more than enough should my laptop fail when I'm away. I also take the laptop to allow me to play about and process some pics before I come home. I normally travel alone and don't drink. ;)

I go away to take pics though, on a general family holiday I would take more memory cards. Cards a relatively cheap.
