B&W Methods

There seems to be a few different methods for B&W digital photography.

What's your method?

How do you get that heavy grain / dirty feel to a B&W image? Mine always seem to look really flat and uninteresting.

Cheers!

Bumping up the contrast seems to give a normal conversion to B&W in Lightroom a bit of something extra. You can also change the HSL "colours" which can make a surprising difference.

There are plug-ins for "grain" . . .

Even so here's a method from http://www.gdargaud.net but it's for a finer, Ansel Adams effect:

Split to RGB and work on the red channel.

Clarify (quite severely, more than once if necessary).

Adjust histogram and gamma.

Increase color depth.

Colorize, adding a blue hue.

Unsharpen.

Greyscale.
