back up camera

Yes
I am confused why do a lot of people have second bodies (exc the pros where I do understand why)?

I think there are probably a few reasons for this. For example, somebody may have upgraded to a full frame camera but want's to keep a 1.6 crop body for the extra reach it gives rather than buy longer focal length lenses. Or maybe somebody wants to keep a smaller body for days out rather than carry around a heavy body. Some people just dont want to let go of their older models and keep them as back up in case they have to send one away for repair.

I have a second body so when I am shooting gigs for example, I can have a standard fast zoom on my main body, and on my second body, I can have either an ultrawide or telephoto (depending on the venue size). In gig situations, as you only have a limited amount of time (and space) in the pit to shoot a band, you don't want to be changing lenses.

Well I had a D60 and then got a D300s.

I did look into selling the D60 though for what they were fetching on ebay I thought I may as well keep it as a spare. Its nice knowing if the D300s died or its battery died etc etc then I've always got the option of using the D60.

Its also a hell of a lot smaller and lighter than the D300s so doesn't really take up much space in my bag and cant really feel any weight difference with the bag either.

Seemed the sensible choice to keep it

The old reason was one for black and white and one for colour for the film users, for others a second body means not having to change lens while shooting, maybe a 24-70 on one body and a 70-200 on the other.

And the rest:
One for colour, one for 'high-speed' colour (400asa as it then was...lol)
One for B&W and another spare, plus another (usually Leica or Contax) rangefinder for sneaky, quiet stuff...

Some guys carried and used as many as six bodies... I saw one guy not only using a whole suite of Nikons but a Rollie TLR and Hasselblad SLR all at the same time...

I keep my old D70 and tend to use it when I want the extra apparent reach for telephoto work. If I want a backup for FF stuff, I would use one of my film bodies (as Arkady's said, I used to have the film bodies loaded with different speeds or colour and B&W.)

Handy to have 2 bodies since it's easier and faster to swap bodies than to swap lenses, as well as removing the chance of stuff getting into the mirror box when swapping lenses.

I just kept my old camera when I upgraded as I was too lazy to sell, I now use both with diferent lens, just because I can.
