back up storage options

hi everyone

my new laptop is going to be with me soon and i would also like to buy two new HD's to back my files and pictures. looking and getting two 1TB units. what does everyone recommend?
 
Everyone will have their ow recommendations and horror stories so don't expect anything too conclusive :lol:

External drives I've had no bother with seagate, but plenty of issues with maxtor and LaCie.

These days I prefer a Samsung internal drive and an enclosure like an icybox.
 
Backup should be stored in multiple locations, I would get a NAS for the home network and then an external HD for backing up and leave it at work or your parents/inlaws/siblings house.

2.5" external HDD go up to 1Tb (I've got a nice usb3 seagate goflex) and don't need a power supply
3.5" external HDD go up to 3Tb but will need a power supply.

What ports will your laptop have? You are looking primarily at USB2, USB3 or esata.

If you go for USB3, it will be backward compatible with USB2.
 
is best to go something with a power supply or does it not matter. also how do i get the second drive to mirror whats is being saved on the first drive.
 
Microsoft SyncToy (free) will mirror your files and keep them updated as often as you like. Very useful.

Regards backup, it depends what you are going to do. Is it family images and snaps or a business?

Also this is a bad time to be buying hard drives given the rise in prices recently! I bought 2x Samsung 2Tb drives at £60 each inc delivery. Now they are up over £100!
 
With 2 backup copies I'd say brand wasn't that important. I've gone off NAS units so I'd not recommend them having had 2 fail. Drives inside were healthy but unreadable without an identical enclosure unit.

The only drive make I've yet to have a failure with is Samsung so that is what I tend to buy now.

Was that the drobo if I remember rightly robert? I had to rma my synology a couple months back for a replacement after slot 5 developed io errors and was a straight swap.
