Backing up issues with a Mac

Yes
I've been backing up my Macbook using Time Machine to an external HDD but noticed that the information I've backed up is locked and I am unable to view it

I'm guessing this is not what I am wanting to be doing, and so can anyone explain to me how I back up without it being locked!

Is the data not simply being 'wrapped up' by Time Machine, ready to be unlocked in the event of problems?

(In a similar way to an Aperture library, for example).

It's not locked, you just need to use the time machine app to view it ;)

Ah OK, so when I view it on my Mac I just need a relevant app to do this?

Right thanks, I'll fire it up tomorrow and see if I can view anything!

Thanks for the info...

You can actually navigate through the Time Machine hard drive and view the files that way. If it's showing a padlock on the folder and refusing you access then the User you are logged in as does not have permission to view them.

However I'd suggest using the Time Machine browser as mentioned above to look for missing items.
