...What programme should I use to copy the files onto.


Also I am using DVD/RWs is that an ok disc format to be using?
 
External hard drives are much easier (and quicker), coupled with 'synctoy' which is free from the microsoft website, they would make a much better solution.

One of the problems of some backup software is that it searches your hard drive to find any changes. All of your hard drive. If you've a lot of images it can, and does take forever. OK I know you can deselect certain folders in some software, but image files can be fairly large, so it will take some time.

I've used various back up software and always found this problem.

Now once the images have been imported onto my storage drive, I simply copy them onto by back up drive into a copy of the original directory. Files that have been "Photshoped" are manually copied, bit of a pain but once you get into the routine no problem. Its a lot quicker than waiting for over 1Tb of images to be scanned.
 
I would suggest HashCheck (and a slow burn) if you use DVDs, so you can be assured the files have been backed up successfully. QuickPar would also help reconstruct the files if they are found to be damaged at a later date.

But backing up to two (or more) external drives is a better and far quicker method.
 
nero is a touch bloated unfortunately (i still have it installed for certain tools mind)

allway sync has various different options, you can sync on a schedule, on the connection of a removable drive, on shutdown etc etc.

i use it to backup from my portable HD to my 2 large capacity backup HDs. works a treat.

I don't have this problem with either Robocopy or Synctoy - both are free from Microsoft.
