Afternoon all?

What options are there for backing up SD cards without a PC/Laptop? I have several external hard drives which are free but is there some sort of card reader I can connect to a HDD in order to backup? Dont really want to buy a laptop at this moment in time (only need the backup option nothing else?)

There used to be a company called 'SmartDisk' that sold HDDs with integrated card readers which could auto-backup CF/SD/whatever to the disk without having a PC handy.

But they appear to have gone under, likely because they were quite overpriced for what they offered ($400 for 40GB).

I guess there's also the fact that ultimately, a flash memory device is more robust than a moving-parts HDD when 'in the field', and it's probably not really sensible to backup to a less reliable device.
 
Your best bet,is to have a look at the epsom range of photo viewer,I think the P5000,is the latest one,used the P2000,with good results,they can give a fair amount of storage space,I think at the moment up to 80gb :)
 
Search 'portable photo storage' on Amazon. Lots of choice there, from the Full Monty Epson/Canon/Vosonic storage-viewers up to 500gb I think (pricey) to the (less pricey) portable drives with built-in readers.
 
I'm in Germany at the mo, so getting funny search results, but have a look at the Digimate III combined card reader and storage device. I bought the bare case on eBay for about £ 20 and fitted my own surplus HDD.

And remember a backup is only a backup if it is a second copy. No point dumping your cards and then erasing them. Then you only have one copy, no backup. For travel I take a laptop (a netbook would do, and not pricey) and the Digimate, make sure I have two safe copies and only then wipe the cards.

thanks for the responses keeping me busy for a while :thumbs:

tdodd: very wise advice, I have plenty of cards to ensure there is no need to wipe any until I'm home, this will purely be to give me that second copy!
 
I picked an iWith made by innoplus. It's a chunky media player running off a 2,5" laptop disk and rechargeable batteries. It's got a CF card slot and backs up the cards.

The thing is I don't use it. I have many CF cards and just spread my shooting over many cards. I use aa disk and have never had a failure yet.
 
I was looking at this and saw various card readers with hard drives (or bare units where you provide your own drive)

Best option for me was getting a CF card reader for my iPad and deleting a load of crap off it to free up some space.

Only tried it with one picture so far and was a bit slow but ended up with a proper RAW file on my iPad which I could view and I dare say with the right app should be able to straighten and crop too.
 
Actually, if we're talking iPad then you can get wifi hard drives to connect to the iPad to give more storage - that might work. Inport via the camera connector kit and store on the wifi hard drive. They usually have a usb connection as well for connecting to a pc/mac.

Filterstorm is a great edit app for the iPad.
 
Hi,

Has anyone come across any portable hard drives that come with SSD drives? I worry that a standard hard drive might get damaged in my luggage.
