I've just bit the bullet and splashed out on a 500mm f4 Nikkor, problem is it won't fit in my existing lowepro backpack. Can anyone advise what's the smallest back pack this lens might fit in. I need to get it on a plane as cabin baggage, i'm flying with Thomson next month and there a pain when it comes to cabin baggage hence the bag needs to be fairly light as the lens takes up most of weight allowance! The plan is to waddle through check in with my Domke waistcoat bulging and then repack the backpack when past the Gestapo at check in. Any advice greatly received, thanks
 
Check out think tank. I use the think tank accelerator v2, weighs less than 1.5 kg and I'm sure your 500mm would fit, it also fits the dimensions especially as some used 20mm depth rather than the permitted 25mm

Sorry Pete, that reply (mine) looks a bit brusque now I'm more awake! Of course, it's obvious that you meant cm rather than mm - an inch thick would be tight even for Easyjet!!! Must learn more smiley codes for use in the quick reply box! :) ;) :D

That's alright :D but its getting more of a nightmare nowadays with hand luggage especially with budget airlines and their size and weight restrictions, for example below, 5kg just isn't enough weight for a 500mm lens, camera, extra's and bag. (lens is 3880 grams), best bag I've seen that would fit a 500mm lens weighs 1500 grams, add camera extra's, you're already over weight.

Thomson Each customer is entitled to a check-in allowance of up to 15kg baggage and a maximum 5kg for hand baggage (max. dimensions: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm).

Thanks for the advice Pete, found a think tank stockist in Sheffield, going to visit and take the lens with me. Your right about it been a nightmare with the holiday airlines, I'd gladly pay to take extra cabin baggage weight but Thomson and Thomas Cook won't entertain it, you don't want to know what the waistcoat weighs fully laden!
