Backpack for large lens mounted camera

I am looking for a back pack to carry my camera gear.

I want one that has quick access to the camera, will carry a large lens (Nikon 400mm), will carry a tripod and generally has enough spare space for some other stuff like food and water etc.

All my local shops don't carry enough stock to compare them and you can't see what you are getting.

Hi Peter - I use the Lowepro Lens Trekker - there's some spare room in there with the 400 on and the bag is bombproof.
Access is quick, should do the trick!

The Lens Trekker is a good bag and strong, I have had 2.I now have a new bag which could if I wanted to take 2x600f4 lenses and still fit in carry on airline sizes--review in the review section along with some pics.Its made by Mr Jan Gear and very very few know about this bag YET..

That's the one Pete - it's a bit big for the 400mm but you said you wanted room for butties!

I have a Lowepro ProRunner 300AW that I use for a medium format film set-up, of the medium-sized backpacks it's the one I've found with the most useful internal space. Not too bulky, but it swallows a lot of gear, and it will take a few slip-lock cases on the outside as well if you need a temporary boost to capacity.
