I'm currently shooting with a D700 and my main lens are nikon 28-70 f2.8 and nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR1. I mainly shoot sports like running and cycle.

My second body at the moment is a D7000 but I was thinking shall I sell the D7000 and grab a D300 or D300s instead so both camera uses same battery and memory card? Also setting will be exactly the same too.

Other expensive option would be get another D700 or grab a D3 as a main and use D700 is backup.

The be fair the D700 is capable on what I'm shooting already so I'm thinking of a D300 or D300s for that crop factor might help in certain situation. Most of the time I will be shooting in day time and sometimes in the evening.

Found a low mileage D3 for £765, D700 for £600, D300s for £400 and D300 for £270.
 
I did use an D300 as a backup to my D700,but in the end just wanted to keep everything FF so went for an D3,but as you say you shoot a lot of sport,the crop factor might come in useful,what the D300/D300s will give you over your D7000 i would run thought the specs and see :)
 
Only benefit of the D7000 i would like to retain is the 1080p video which I do use for video on some work (not the end of the day if no video) and the high ISO quality compare to D300(s).

The D300(s) will give me exactly the same control, body handle, batterys, memory card type etc to my D700. So that means shooting with D700 and D300 on a event will make life alot easier.

If buying a D300 means I can still keep the D7000 for video and other social stuff because the D300 is cheap nowaday. If buying another D700 or even a D3 means my D7000 plus 2 DX lens have to go to fund the purchase.

Another thing is D3 can't use my d700 battery but d700 can use the d3 battery. D300 will share everything the same to my d700.
 
I got a feeling I will buy a D3 and sell my D7000, tamron 17-55 f2.8 and nikon 35mm f1.8 DX.

My work horse lens is the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and Nikon 28-70 f2.8, but also have a Nikon 50 f1.8 AFS and Tamron 19-35mm and few old nikon manual lens.

Money is tight so is a hard decision.

I'd personally go for another D700 as they can be had for relative peanuts and everything will be identical - sensor, controls, battery, memory card.
 
A D3 is very tempting but that also means I need to buy extra batteries. Altho my D700 can use D3 batteries but D3 can't use D700 batteries.

That means D700 and D300(s) might be a option. Now a decision to make is whether to get a DX or FX as backup. D300 with the reach would be good for sports in daylight but D700 offers quality in low light for other situation.
