Backup software/LR3 issue

Is anyone using software to perform their backups rather than doing it manually?

Because of the way I work with lightroom I'm looking for something that's preferably free and will look back through my files and update anything that's changed as well as adding in recent stuff.

I use TimeMachine but don't really trust it since my logic board died and my old backups were useless when I got my iMac back as they were all linked to the mac address on the old (dead) logic board. I had to just delete all my TM backups and start again.

Also, I backup my LR catalogue but that doesn't actually help as I'll explain.

I can backup the new stuff easily enough manually but say I shoot on sat and sunday and download the images to dated folders on my mac on sunday night. I do my backups on monday so I have the original images backed up. On Tuesday I open the folders from sat and sun and edit some images in Silver Efex - so LR makes a copy of the image and works on that in SEP then saves the new file back into the dated folder along with the original. Unless I'm mistaken LR makes an actual copy of the file, not just a virtual one which would be backed up when I backup the LR catalogue.

When I goto do my backups the following Monday I'll make a copy of any new folders from the following monday onwards but the new files which LR had created and edited in SEP would miss being backedup. Yes I could go through the folders and save the new files over to the backup HDs but if I've been shooting everyday that week that could take forever so I'm looking for a program that can identify the new files that are in the saturday and sunday folders on my iMac HD but not on the external backup HD and copy them over.
 
If you fancy a play with command lines - cron and rsync will do what you want. But that's not GUI like with traditional Mac apps.
 
I use Integeo Backup to back my image files. This is a Mac programe is and mine came free with my LaCie external hard drives.

You can programe it to back up which files you want. It checks for changes to files as well and backs up those that have been changed ( i.e.you've renamed them or dropped them into Photoshop from Lightroom and done some retouching ). You can set it up to backup at specific times , but prefer to manually backup when I need to.

By the way if you need to recover files from time machine used on another Mac you need to use Migration assistant, not straight from time machine

That doesn't make any sense at all. I appreciate you may not have known it or not found the answer, but it is not tied to a mac address. I've done that several times between different machines. Two simple ways:

1. Use the migration assistant, it will bring back the data either straight from another hard disk or from another time machine backup that wasn't your machine.
2. You can also hold down the option key (alt) whilst clicking on the time machine logo and choose to connect to another backup for restore.

I did look for a solution at the time with the Time Machine thing but couldn't get anything reliable. If I had wanted to setup a new iMac and put all the files from the Time Machine onto it I could do so but because I had a new logic board (and mac address) Time Machine couldn't add new backups onto the old ones (as it would normally) or something like that.

Maybe it's not all that bad actually.
 
I see what you mean. Yes it would not "continue" the backup with the previous backup. Although if you kept your drive it should recognise the uuid and offer you to reuse at that point but I admit it is scary to go that far.

Whatever you are comfortable with bud :)
