I'm after a Macbook Pro but notice that Mac Buyers Guide says 'Don't Buy - Updates soon'. Anybody know if anything major is rumoured or if I should just go ahead anyway?

Just go ahead and buy one... If you want one that much surely you'll keep it long enough that the small upgrade, if any, isn't likely to affect resale prices in the long term?

macbook's hold their value very well, you could buy now, and sell when the new one comes out for hardly any less than you paid. At least that's what I've found

Tends to be the big new models with new features and design come with the big Expo events, then through the next 2 years performance upgrades (CPU/Memory) just get announced without much fuss.

Just seen that PC world have a really good deal on the 13" Macbook Pro at the moment (£200 off) so I think that may have decided me!

Thanks for the comments... really appreciated! :)

I saw the one you refer to in PC World on Saturday and it looked very nice. The sales guy said it was exclusive to PC World and not available in the Apple store or Apple online. I'm not sure if thats a good thing or not?

Looks like it may be a new CPU from Intel.

Claimed to have a performance hike.

No details.May get something from CES

Yeah, it's got the processor of the lower spec 13" model but the memory and HD of the higher spec one ... So not standard Apple then

I have a 15 inch MBP and so does my Mum. Hers has a bigger HD, the same memory and a slightly slower processor. We both run the same imaging software and have similar sized camera files. Having used both machines I can't tell any real difference between them in terms of speed or file handling.

If you can save a few quid with this PC World specced model, it sounds like a god deal to me. :)

It's not, they're old stock ;)

The one in PCWorld is a previous revision before they did a speed bump.

Personally I'd buy a refurb off the Apple store. You wont know it's a refurb as it'll look like new and it'll come with full warranty still. I nearly always buy the refurbs now.

Just read that apple may be announcing new touch screen tablet's this week. Maybe this is why its a bad time to buy a new mac book. Prices may come down a lot in light of the products. But then again if you need one then buy one. I'm on my second (first got stolen,) couldn't live without it now!

The Apple bash is on the end of January in California.. and they'll be, as usual be adding an changing

Odds on there will be iLife10 and iWork10 for immediate release. There is a lot of talk on a netbook style machine with a touch screen.

The Mac Pro desktop must be ugraded - as the new 27" with the i7 processor is 11% faster - word is a 6 core processor.

The laptops were upgraded earlier this year so its a possible that something will happen there....

However, if you wait another few months - there will be new machines again - so if you keep waiting you'll never jump. However, unless you really need a new machine just now (and the PC world deal looks good!) I'd personally hang back until end Jan

Feb 9-13th

iLife's been on an 18 month lifecycle since the '06 release, so the updates likely to be mid 2010, probably announced at the Developers conference around June.

Expect most of the effort to be in making it all 64bit, more efficient and optimised for Snow Leopard.

BTW, the '09 moniker has been dropped from current iLife and iWork packaging so it doesn't appear outdated...

There are events that might or might not be the catalyst for an update but nobody really knows. The Mac pro is definitely likely to get an upgrade soon and there is also likely to be a quad core upgrade for the macbook pro too. Apple have been rumoured to have purchases tens of thousands of 10" touch screen so there might also be a tablet coming (hot on the tail of Apple buying www.iTablet.com as a web address).

Thing is that for most of us the current models are more than fast enough so nothing really to look forward to.
